im after a teleconvertor for the sigma 50-150 f2.8

which is best on a budget and what range would i be getting on a crop lens

am i right il loose 2 stops on aperture?

ive seen some teleconvertors on ebay for around £70 new id rather get a better second hand one, any advice?

I've got a sigma ex dg. It does the job well enough and can be had for around £100 used.

Yes, you'll loose some light, your 2.8 will become 5.6 but that's the trade off for getting extra reach cheaply.

Oh and to answer you're other question, with a 2x tc on that lens and a crop body your focal length will be equivalent to 450mm on a full frame body - 150*2=300*1.5=450.

Hi

With a (Canon) 1.4 TC you'll loose 1 stop of light so it'll become an F4 lens, the 2.0 TC you will loose 2 stops of light so it becomes an F5.6.

Would have thought the Sigma TC would be your best bet to match up with your lens - not sure what quality you'll loose ...
 
FWIW (and going purely on what I've been told by a retailer who doesn't stock them), Sigma lenses work best with Sigma telecons. A 2x telecon will indeed lose you 2 stops, making your f/2.8 lens effectively f/5.6. A 1.4x telecon will lose one stop, so f/4.

EX DG would be my suggestion for your lens.

Thats absolutly my own experience with the Sigma lenses ive previously owned (70-200mm and 120-300mm)
 
I have the Sigma 1.4x and 2x EX DG's that I use on my 70-200, they appear to work very well with this lens and I am happy with the results I have achieved so far.

I was concerned when I read that the 2x wasn't very good with the 70-200 as I had just bought one off here:nono:

I have yet to try them on my 50-500 but that won't auto focus with either so that will be on some moon shots and manual focus ;)

150mm on a 1.4 will give you 225mm f/4

200mm on a 1.4 will give you 280mm f/4

150mm on a 2 will give you a 300mm f/5.6

200mm on a 2 will give you 400mm f/5.6

Go for the 70-200mm

There lots of threads on teleconvertors use the search facility. Basically you have 2 types, ones that report the correct aperture and ones that don't. The ones that don't report or lie to the camera allow you to still autofocus. Personally Kenko is the only 3rd party brand I would recommend, I wouldn't touch any of the non branded eBay ones with a barge pole.

You lose 1fstop of light (f2.8 becomes f4) with a 1.4x TC and about 50% autofocus speed.

You lose 2 fstops of light (f2.8 becomes f5.6) with a 2x TC and about 75% autofocus speed.

I'd suggest a Kenko Pro if you can get it cheaper than the Sigma. I had the 1.4x versions of both at the same time, so shot some comparisons with a number of lenses, including a Sigma 100-300mm f/4. They were pretty much identical (except that the ones with the Sigma TC came out with a very slight colour shift towards yellow).

Just be aware that the rear element of the zoom could collide with the front element of the TC when zooming, so check carefully before zooming from wide to tele like a man possessed ;)

Probably like many here I have road-tested most types of TC and in terms of bang-for-buck I would recommend the Kenko pro 300.

I looked the price of these up for a mate of mine yesterday and the cheapest I could find was around £140 from Simply Electronics. This would be my No1 choice in your shoes.

glad to hear mobile is all good and working!

people have also said sigma telea work best with sigma lens, unsure which to go for

My experience of Sigma TCs (I have owned 4 or 5 in various mounts; still do in fact, I have a x2 Sigma APO EX in Sony fit !) is that they do not provide such sharp images as the Kenko pro equivalents.

I think the Sigma are much more expensive as well.

to the OP...do you the larger OS version? I presume that you do, as the older on was much smaller and probs didn't allow for a TC to be used.

I would really only go for the 1.4x if you want to maintain good quality but I've been happy with my sigma so far for my happy snapper purposes.
I might try a kenko 1.4x though...looks interesting

yeah sigma are not far off double, seen a few kenko on ebay new for £110 mark

i have the 50-150 HSM but the non OS version, and id be going for 1.4x so i dont loose too much aperature

With which lens/telecon combinations?
 
unsure on how much dept of field id loose with the x2, lens would only been used in day light so imagine id get away with the f5.6, or how much sharpeness ill loose, since im on a crop sensor would i best just going for the 1.4x and f4

Just a word of warning about the Kenko. There's no Sigma lenses listed on the Kenko compatibility sheet http://www.kenkoglobal.com/support.html however I have used a Kenko Pro300 DGX 1.4x converter with a Sigma 150-500 OS on a Canon mount without any problems. I'm sure there'll be someone who can confirm whether your lens is compatible or not though. I had a Kenko MC7 2x converter which also worked fine with the Sigma although the older type certainly had much more of a detrimental effect to the IQ and AF than the newer Pro300 DGX models.

I've got both sigma ex dg converters that I use with my Sigma 120-300 lens. The 1.4 is first class, pin sharp results even useable wide open ( a nats better stopped down ). The 2x is good but you loose a little sharpness and the contrast drops a tad over the 1.4, its much better stopped down but not as good overall as the 1.4. I've still made lovely A3 prints off both though. I bought my sigma 1.4 off ebay for £140 ( it was as new) so its worth considering second hand. I would really like the 50-150 for my D7000 travel set up but the missus will string me up if I buy any more gear this year!
 
kenko pro is around the £120 mark
sigma is around £190 mark

thats with them both been new,

if price wasnt involved and they where both the same price, would you go for the sigma?

ive read some reviews that the kenko is better on NON HSM models

and the sigma would be better on my sigma HSM

might hire the 1.4 sigma and test it its around £26 for the week
