Rethinking my gear.

I am evaluating my lens collection again and toying with the idea of moving on the 100 - 400L 4 - 5.6 for around £925.00 and going for the 70 - 200mm F2.8 with a TC. However, how many stops would I loose with the 2x convertor I think it would end up at F4 when extended - am I correct. This is still better that the 100 - 400L @ 5.6 when light is required.

Any ideas on TC's reductions on stops?
 
1 stop for a 1.4x
2 stops for a 2x

So a 70-200 2.8 would result in F4 with the 1.4x, or 5.6 with the 2x.
 
I have tried a x2 on my 70-200 non IS lens and it does take you upto to F5.6, but be aware I could only use the central AF point, not sure if it's the same on the IS version !!

Thanks - so what would a 70 - 200 + 1.4 TC work out at length wise on a 1.6 body?
 
If Canon are the same as Nikon, be careful that you order the correct Converter to go with your lenses - I've just got the new 2x Converter for the new AF-VR lenses we bought, but the older (and I'm only talking a couple of years older) converters don't offer full AF and metering functionality.
The websites should have a list of compatible lenses listed.
 
Fortunately Canon only produce 2 converters, in 2 versions, 1.4 and 2 Mk1 and Mk2 both are compatible with all lenses on the compatibility list, however some or all Sigma lenses arent compatible with them for some reason !
