Looking at buying a TC (canon fit) to use primarily on a sigma 70-200 2,8 on my 50d body, question is which one?
Sigma 1.4 EX DG APO @ £191
Kenko 1.4 MC4 DGX £122.99
Any other suggestions?

Was looking at 2x but think i might loose too much speed for shooting football.

Anybody got any experience with these? any issues with different lenses? would be nice if it worked with my canon 17-85 usm and sigma 18-250 HSM as well but not essential, more worried about using it with the big sigma when shooting football/rugby

I have the Sigma one and results with the Canon 70-200 2.8 (non-IS) are very good imo.

Have also heard good things about the Kenko ones.

I wouldn't think it would work well with those other two lenses.
 
Sigma lens struggle with a kenko for some reason - i had to swap to the sigma teleconverter when i got a sigma lens - the Kenko was fine with Canon lens.

If you look around you can pick up a Canon Mk II 1.4x for less than £180 (2nd hand). No TC will work with your 17-85mm as it's an EF-S fitment. Is the 18-250mm a DC or DG?

I've also heard that the canon TC can be fussy but the sigma version works with both canon and sigma lenses, can anyone confirm this?

Hi Darren,

Personaly I would not use a TC on a 70-200mm lens while shooting football/rugby. I have photographed loads and loads and loads of football/rugby matches while working as a press photographer for the largest group of newspapers in Wales. I always found just using the 70-200 f2.8 lens more that adequate for the job. You will find that if you can move yourself around to different positions around the field you will get all the action you need. The only time I would use a longer lens would be if you can't move around like when photographing Internationals, then I would use a 300mm f2.8 on one body and the 70-200 f2.8 on another body.

Most Saturday afternoons I would shoot two games, finishing ten min's before half time and getting to the second game 10 min's after the second half started and always came away with loads of shots from both games.
