I currently have a Sigma 70-30mm F4-5.6 DG OS Lens on my Canon 450D and still struggle to get up close and personal with wildlife. As this is not a very fast lens due to a limited budget, would a 1.4x or 2x convertor make it unuseable apart from in very bright days.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Off to Focus on Imaging at NEC Sunday hope to try some tech out there as well.

I don't have personal experience with that lens, but there may be autofocus issues with a 2x converter.
Best also to check the manufacturer's website to see if there are compatibility problems - esp. where there is a risk of damage to the rear element of the lens.
 
If your after more reach id pocket the money you would spend on the TC as i doubt the results would be worth the spend. Not sure how quick the focus is on your lens but it would be a lot slower with a TC on. Not sure about 3rd party convertors but with a sigma 1.4 you would lose AF at the long end and completely with a 2x.
 
Probably worth the OP getting a copy of the current issue of Amateur Photographer which has an in depth article on teleconverters.
