Hi

Can anybody help me?? a number of questions.

I have two telephone lines into the house. I thought they came into the same socket. There are four wires, two of which are attached. what are the other two for ??? (this line is not the dsl one)

Is it possible to wire up the system with the wires the wrong way round??

The reason I ask is that I am trying to install fixed line broadband (getting rid of the wireless) and the signal is very weak. I am trying to run a tele wire direct from the router to the connection from outside to rule out problems in the house (loads of wires and sockets). It is possible the "line in" box is in the loft somewhere. Any pitfalls anyone can see??

Sorry for the ramble, but getting totally confused

Jon

This may help

All I know really is the Orange/White wire is the bell/ringer circuit which is not needed as modern phones don't need it and it can cause interference for ADSL. It can be disconnected I got a 1mb increase in speed after i did mine

Oh for best connection you should not plug into an extension but the master.
I believe you should not do anything to any wires before the master socket you may only connect after this most have the split socket where you take off half of it which plugs into a socket inside

legally you cant touch the master socket internally, it is owned by BT. if you break it and they have to come out and sort it they will shaft you.

The new type you can as part of it comes away you can conect to this part only it has like a internal plug only half of the cover comes off

Do you have 2 telephone lines with 2 numbers?

As Chaz said, you shouldn’t touch the incoming wiring, this is the domain of your service provider. The incoming pair must be connected into a MASTER socket on terminals 2 and 5 which can be reversed.
A modern master socket has a pull out plug to allow you to connect extensions, you can make your own connections after this but shouldn’t interfere with the wiring coming into the master.
The extensions are connected to terminals 2 and 5, but make sure all the sockets are connected so that all terminals 2 are connected together and all 5 are connected together. In addition, a connection is required from terminal 3 from the master onto terminal 3 on all the slave (extension) sockets, this is the ringing circuit.
A master socket can be indentified by a capacitor mounted on the circuit board, the slaves don’t have this capacitor.

Thanks guys, you've given me a deeper understanding....I'm off to see if I can put it into paractice

I may be back...........................;)
