Alright, I have just registered. And I am throwing a discussion here.
As a relatively new owner of Canon 6D (came from Pentax system), I have kind of lens selection dilemma. In the first place I want to keep my lens collection as low as possible. I use to have 7 lenses before and although I know this is not something spectacular, it was not really practical as amateur usage only. Most of them was just collecting dust on the shelf. Anyway, long story short: I would like to have only three lenses: wide angle, 50 mm universal warrior and telephoto in the 70-200/300 range as portrait and zoo kind of things. I have already got the first two: 28mm f2.8 IS & 50 f1.8 and these are going to be my travel companion kit. Now I am looking for the third one and narrowed the choices as following:
1) Tamron 70-300 f4-5.6 VC USD
2) Canon 70-200 f4 IS
3) Tamron 70-200 f2.8 VC USD
Tamron 70-300 - it is compact, very cheap and has not bad IQ. However as a consumer zoom there are compromises. Bokeh is not very pleasant and IQ is not always the best wide opened. it is not weather resistant. I am not sure about the autofocus performance too - will it be able to track my 2 years old son running around?
Canon 70-200 f4 IS - Almost perfect choice, just about right price, IQ leaving no compromises and all of the Canon L glass goodies. But will it be good for portraits with not that fast aperture? And although it is relatively light, it's size is not that small. I don't like "look at me" white colour either. And also it comes only with one year warranty against five for Tamrons.
Tamron 70-200 f2.8 VC USD - Looks like a winner, excellent IQ almost across the range (it was scored even better than Canon 70-200 f2.8 II in dxomark), whether sealed, fast autofocus, very effective VC and excellent build quality. 5 years warranty. The price is a bit more than I was intentionally willing to pay but that is not a big deal. Canon's equivalent is probably better overall, but out of realistic money to spend on occasional hobby usage. Only the size and weight of 70-200 f2.8 are putting me off a bit. How cumbersome is such a kind of kit? Obviously, I am not going to travel with it, I have already got compact setup for that. But for family events, general portraits and stuff like that will it be too much to hang around?
At the end of the day, I would like to have the best IQ for the money and purpose, providing that I would have only these three lenses.
Any views on that? Anyone, who has comparable experience on these lenses?
