Telephoto for my D3100

I've only just bought my D3100 but I've been playing around with a friends D500 with a telephoto on it and I really would like one myself.

There are probably other threads on this but I couldn't see any, so sorry for reposting if there are.

I've been looking at lenses, but I don't really know much about the tech jargon. Using a comparison website these are the results I was given.

Do you think the "Sigma 50-200mm f/4-5.6 DC OS HSM Nikon-f" is a good lens? It's incredibly cheap in comparison to the Nikon official version. My only question is will it auto focus with my body? Thanks in advance for your help.
 
In answer to your question, yes it will AF on your D3100 (HSM=Hyper-Sonic Motor).

However for around £110-£125 you can pick up a second hand Nikon 55-200mm VR in as new condition which is the perfect partner to your kit lens (I assume 18-55mmVR). For the price difference I would not consider this Sigma.

They are a great 2 lens combo to get you started.
 
I'm just always wary buying second hand (though I haven't bought any camera equipment second hand before). Is there somewhere you recommend which a trustworthy second hand? As I'd hate to spend the money (I'm a student and a father so £125 is still a decent chunk of change to me) and have it be in bad condition.

Depends on how much you want to spend.

You get what you pay for when it comes to lenses. Your get far better pictures out of the Nikon
 
These forums or AV Forums is where I normally sell/buy mine. I too used to be very cautious but most people keep there gear in good condition and are honest enough about the condition of the lens. It is an expensive hobby and only gets worse the more you understand/get better.

You could get a new copy of the 55-200mm VR for around £150 (see amazon).

I had the same dilemma a couple of weeks ago. Ended up picking a second hand Nikon lens up on ebay for £90. Cant complain about condition, apart from a couple of scratches on the body its as good as new.

Im in no way an expert but to my untrained eye it seems a brilliant lens for the price. The VR and AF are a lot noisier than the kit lens though

I have the nikon d3100. I just just bought the sigma 18-200. It's great really lovely. Has not come off my camera yet since I bought it.
 
I bought a second hand 55-200 VR for 115 and over the last few days out I have been taking that lens as opposed to the 18-135 kit lens that came with D80 and I really like that lens.

It is a good value lens.
 
exactly what Sep said. the 55-200 VR is an awesome value lens. The VR is very handy. I would certainly buy a used copy over the Sigma. They normally sell on here for £110-£120 depending on condition, and that's where I'd get a used one.
