Telephoto lens choice (Canon)

Hi all,

I currently own 3 telephoto lenses:
- Canon 70-200mm f4L
- Canon 70-200mm f4L IS
- Canon 200mm f2.8 MkII

I am using a Canon 40D which I don't wish to change to FF in the short term future.

I enjoy shooting football and would like to shoot more motorsports with the setup above (with the inclusion of a monopod as well). I absolutely love the 200mm f2.8 for its sharpness, focus speed and large aperture and equally admire the two zoom lenses. I want to gain a little more focal length on the lenses and wanted some advice on whether to go for a 1.4x or 2x teleconverter. I feel a 1.4x on a crop sensor would be ideal as it would give me enough reach and a very usable f4 and f5.6 (on each lens), whereas the 2x will push the apeture of the zoom lens too much. Do you feel it would provide enough reach for panning motorsport shots though? For footie I could always grab myself a 2nd body if need be and run the 200mm with TC 1.4x on one (at f4) and the zoom on the other.

I plan to move on one of the zoom lenses to fund the purchase of a TC; still not sure which one yet!

I'd go for the 1.4. Keeps AF with all the lenses.

i take it your aware of the (f8 rule) if a teleconverter takes your lens beyond f8 it will have difficulty focusing in af mode hth mike

There's one in the classifieds section, probably best just to pick that up and play around with that to get experience first hand

Yes, want to keep everything AF'ing - 1.4x will be perfect for the job. Ta
