Telephoto lens for Canada trip

I am going to Canada later this year and was after some advice on a suitable telephoto lens. Main subjects will be black bears. I currently use a 300mm with convertors on both FF and crop bodies, but not sure of the weight factor.

The Canon 70-300L lens gets a very good following on here, if you want something compact and fairly light - whether it'll be long enough though ??? Then there is the Canon 100-400 mkI or II depending on your budget.

You've also got the various Sigma long lens and the Tamron 150-600 which I think Gramps uses and is very impressed with.

Kind of depends on your budget and what focal range you'd ideally like.

Thanks for the replies. I currently use a 300mm F2.8L which weighs in at around 2.6kg. I cannot fault its sharpness, even with the 1.4tc. I had thought of the new Siggy 150-600, but the weight comes in at around 2.9kg. My concern is weight for the hand luggage. Looking at the Sigma price in Canada I might be tempted to purchase one over there as I can pick one up for £1000 with the dollar being weak against the pound. Whats the 300mm F4 IS L like with a 1.4?

I've used my F4 (can't afford the f2.8 :D ) with the canon 1.4mkIII TC and it worked a treat. I didn't notice any loss of AF nor any noticeable IQ drop. Much lighter than your 2.8 as well...

Depends which airline you're going with. Used BA to South Africa for safari used thinktank accelerator v2 and took 300mm f2.8 plus TCs and 70-200mm f2.8 plus other bits and only one camera body and had no issues. You need to check hand luggage restrictions on your airline that you are using, plus any internal airline weight restrictions. Also factor in the weight of your bag, hence why I got the thinktank because it was a 1/3 of the weight of my lowepro.
