Telephoto lens for Canon suggestions...

If you could stretch your budget abit, you could probably get a good second hand 70-200 f4 L lens. Though, the amazon lens would be better.
 
I've used the 55-250 IS and it is a cracker for the price. I will be putting it up for sale here soon as I've now upgraded to the 70-200 f/4 IS.
 
I have the 70-300 IS and i am very very pleased with it. It has the newer generation IS which i believe is 4 stops and it is amazing. Stop down a little and its sharp right through the range. Excellent value!

You'd be happy with either lens - it depends on how much of your budget you want to spend and what you are wanting to use it for ?

If you want to spend £350, I'd go for the 70-300IS, if this is a push and means something else may suffer - tripod, bag etc, I'd go for the 55-250IS.

The 55-250IS is a cracker of a lens and for the cost is a real gem ...

I've not got much else on my list but want to get this decision right. Seeing the 70-200 L series (non-IS) lens for £500 has got me thinking. To be honest though, my photography probably isn't ready for a £500 lens! :D Also thinking get the 70-300 IS to see me through and then in the distant future i can get posh gear also when I've got a body to justify it!

Are you talking about the 70-300mm IS USM lens or the "L" version of the same?

The 70-300IS is a great lens and will def see you through for a long while, ESP if it's for general photography. And don't forget, at the point of upgrade you can always sell the 70-300 on, they do hold on to their price reasonably well.
 
Your photography might not be ready for a £500 L lens, but that doesent mean you shouldn't get one :) I personal have not used a lens with image stabilisation for around 8 months after buying a 28-105 Usm lens. I upgraded from a kit lens. I haven't found a need for it. Which is why I'm going to get the 70-200 non is :)
 
Heres my thoughts on it.

Your photography is not ready you say for a £500 lens YET, but I know for a fact that when it is you will be trading in those other 2 you have pointed us to to get the £500 one.
So if it means saving that little bit extra to get it, do it you will not regret it. Plus it will work out cheaper in the long run.

Photography can be an expensive hobby but my thoughts on it are this, I buy the best I can afford as if then I get bad results its me not the equipment.
Some will say I am a Gear snob, well thats my choice but I know its not the gear that gets the bad results:lol:

I have the 55-250 is and it's a gem, for the money it's great! And at that price on amazon you can't go wrong really... Obviously the 70-200L is a sharper lens, but it's £300+ more and doesn't have the image stabilizer!

Besides you could always use the rest of your budget on more stuff, a nifty fifty for example...
 
When I had my canon 1000D the first telephoto lens I went for was the 70-200 f4 non is and I didn't regret the purchase. I used the lens in all shooting conditions and it never failed with the results even at high ISO.
I certainly didn't miss not having image stability.
They are a worthwhile investment and pop up often in the classifieds for less than £400.

I already have a nifty fifty.

Looks like I'll bide my time and see what happens. Got the cash ready to go so can jump on a bargain!

The 70-300 IS is a good lens and you lose a lot of reach compared to it if you go with the 70-200L.
 
I have had 55-250 since i bought my 450D and, as others have commented, it is a great lens. I have just got a 100-400 but i will keep the 55-250 as it is lightweight and compact and i can definitely see mysely using it in the future.

We also have the 70-300 USM IS, non L version and my partner uses it most of the time and gets lovely results. I agree with Neil's post above and think this is a good alternative if you need more reach than the 70-200 gives.
 
Another vote for the 70-300 IS (non L). I don't think I'd buy a long lens without IS again.

I've got shots with this lens that I wouldn't have got with a non-IS L lens
 
I hope so, £350 with a UV filter aswell so can afford to punt it on if needs must.

I pick it up in a few hours so some shots will appear on my Flickr.

Need a 7d now :/
 
Thats not too bad, Second hand i presume? and calm down:P your going to get addicted to buying gear :P your current camera should do...for a few months :P
 
Yeah preloved not too old though. Waiting for tomorrow to give it a good testing!

I'm already addicted, ordered a cheap back up flash gun yesterday too, along with a selection of filters...

New body will have to wait now I'm all out of £££

Not a bad price if the age is good! I was going to get mines 2nd hand off here. But my fiancée told me to wait till the end of the month and I can have s shiney new one :D so that is what I'll do. Looks like christmas is coming early for me :)

Good stuff, after being recommended it off here, I looked on ebay and there was one local, the seal on the deal was the fact I was driving right through the town it was in today anyway so would be rude not to. Came with a Hoya UV filter on it...don't think the guy used it too often. Can't wait till tomorrow to get out with it! The Fiancee wasn't too happy :razz: Wait till sh see's the rest f the gear drop through the door :bonk:
