Telephoto lens !

I had read article in April 2011 edition of PhotoPlus magazine comparing telephoto zooms.
The Telephoto zooms on test included my current canon 70-300 f4-5.6 IS USM.
The result of the test revealed what I had always said about my canon zoom. It that the image quality ( IQ ) is some what soft !
This result came as no surprise to me, however what was a surprise was the Tamron SP 70-300 f4-5.6 Di VC USD.

In that the lens had a mental fixing and the IQ was Sharpe thought out the range.
So off I went to my local Jessop’s and tried out the Tamron with my canon.
Indeed the IQ on the Tamron is sharper.

Does any one own this lens at that can give me a users review please ?

Also should I sell my Canon 70-300 IS USM and buy either the Tamron SP 70-300, Sigma 70-300 ( though none have Optical stabilizing ), or go the ultimate lens and buy the Canon 70-300 L IS USM ?
 
I guess the main thing is do you actually notice the softness in your shots? I had one, and it was spot on, and when it was released was referred to as a 'hidden L lens'. The build quality isn't up to L standards, but the glass is pretty close.

Personally I don't put any faith in tests, (especially carried out by magazines!), but if you are really bothered then maybe it's time to upgrade. I don't know anything about the 70-300 L, but a year or 2 ago when I was looking the only way to get sharper than the 70-300 IS USM was to start looking at the canon 70-200 zooms.

I have looked at 70-200 and the older model can be purchased for sub £500 !
Personally I do like the reach o f the 300 though and my current 70-300 fits in to a bum bag for carrying around.
I have read other reviews on the web regarding my current 70-300 IS USM and the general point expressed is the softness.
I went as far as chatting to a Canon Technicain in Jessop's one weekend and he confirmed that the 70-300 IS USM is prone to being sift over 270mm !

So a difficult choice at the moment, as what ever lens I buy I would like to keep it for a long time.

Just received delivery of a 70-300L today, although I won't be able to try it out until at least the weekend (it's dark here by about 6pm so no chance to try it after work).
 
Canons 100-300mm F5.6 had better Glass than the 75-300mm range and you can pick them up for £75.00 second hand no i.s though
