I just picked up a Kenko MC7 DG 2x Teleconverter which I've tried on my D90/D700 with:

- Tamron 70-300 f4-5.6
- Tamron 70-200 f2.8

I tried these out quickly yesterday, on the tripod (unfortunately I don't have the pictures to hand just now, but may post them up later) and even chimping the images from the camera, I was surprised to see how soft they were, even upping the aperture to about f10/f11 and fine tuning the focus manually.

The results were more acceptable with the 70-200/f2.8.

I do know to expect a degradation of image quality using a 2x Teleconverter, but the results didn't seem worth getting out of bed for!

Convince me that it's better holding onto the 70-300 and/or the teleconverter!?!

Might find I just invest in a better longer lens, quite fancy doing some birding and some motorsport photography at some point in future.

in the old days of film 2x teleconverters were used with fast primes to give the extra reach and because primes and superior optical quality there was very little IQ difference. out of the two mentioned its best to get the 70-200mm f2.8 but it weighs a ton and you might not need f2.8 so it's all dependant on your needs.
