Hi im going on holiday to the Spanish islands this summer and as well as my Canon 550D and 15-85 I was thinking of taking another lens, I've been eyeing out the Tamron 70-300 vc usd and the sigma 50 1.4 hsm. Eventualy I would like to purchase both of these lenses but the funds don't permit this at this moment in time, so if you were in my shoes which lens would you pick and why? Ps: I should point out that I have 2 weddings and tattoo conventions to go too late this summer.

Hi Billy
It depends what sort of things you intend shooting
If you need the reach then s telephoto is a must

A prime is always best in terms quality but obviously have limitations

The 50mm is a cracking lens

IMO an f/1.8 50mm is fast enough and doesn't have the ultra shallow DoF focus "problems" of the faster lenses - way cheaper too! At the moment you have 50mm covered and there will be plenty of sun around during your holiday (well, during the day, anyway!) so I would get the 70-300 for the holiday and save for the 50mm f/1.8 - well under £100 new.

Update. I bought the Tamron 70-300 VC USD shortly after I posted the original message here and I must admit I love it.
On holiday I used the tamron more than I used my 15-85 **** is also a superb lens but now I'm thinking maybe I'll sell on the 15-85 and get a Tamron 24-70 F/2 8 VC USD as apart from the odd landscape shot I hardly ever shoot at 15mm and the 24-70 would be ideal for indoor shots.
