Telescope for Astrophotography

I think my next major purchase in terms of gear is going to be a telescope or a really long prime lens, because I want to try my hand at astrophotography. I've done some peripheral browsing, and I'm looking to spend 200-300 pounds...

Any suggestions???

I'm going through the same process - in my pre DSLR days I had a 4 inch Newtonian (but never did anything photowise with it).

The basis I'm working from is that you first need to think about what sort of stuff you want to photograph - planets & moon or Deep Sky Objects.

From experience I've always been under the impression that a Refractor or Maksutov Cassegrain are better for the former and Newtonians are better for distant fuzzy things.

From my criteria the one scope that consitently seems to pop up is the Sky Watcher Skymax 127 (About £380 wit goto control or 299 wihout). I'm sure this scope would be fine for short exposure stuff - but I have no idea if it can or will track accurately enough for longer exposures.

This is about as far as I've got with my research - so I'd be keen to see how this thread progresses.

I looked at the Skymax...it looked pretty promising. They have one with and without the database program on the control pad. I'm wondering if something like that might be worth the extra money for.

You will need a fast scope on an equatorial mount that is able to track the object to prevent star trails. For longer exposures you'll need an auto guidance system.Skywatcher eq6 covers most of your needs at a price and you still need autoguider and laptop.
I've a 3inch apo ed refractor on a cg5 mount. Not tried with 450d yet but hoping to get 10 sec exposures.
