Telezoom lens for D3100

Hi,

I'm about to purchase a Nikon D3100 as my first DSLR and I'm going on a Safari in the future so would like a longer lens.

Can anybody reckon any?

I've been looking at these two...

Tamron-AF-70-300mm-F4-5-6-Macro

Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 DG Macro

I've been looking at twin lens kits but the cheapest I've found so far is to buy them both separate.

Also can anybody a bag to hold the camera and extra lens in?

Neither of those lenses will have VR on a D3100, and I don't expect that you want to lug a tripod around on a safari. I know the Nikon 55-300 VR is quite a bit more expensive, but I think you'd be a lot happier with it.
 
I've been looking for a Safari lens for my D90 and hadn't considered the Tamron & Sigma makes.

I've been looking at the Nikon AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED which is considerably expensive than the tamron/sigma
 
You might want more reach... have a look at the 80-400 (nikon or tokina) or the 50-500 (sigma) or I think there was a 200-500 sigma... but not sure of quality.

Don't want to be too close to the (hungry) lions eyeing tinned food (you in a car) ;)

Lenses will depend on budget, tho I think there is a vr 70-300 you may want to check out too.

Any pics on flickr (lenses / safari)?
Have a look and see what other people used ?

As someone who has owned both of those lenses I'd advise you to save your money. A safari is (for most people) a trip of a lifetime and you're gonna be heavily disappointed with the image quality from those lenses - they're "budget" even by Sigma and Tamron standards.

If the Nikon 70-300VR is out of your budget then take a look at the other zooms from Sigma/Tamron/Tokina but remember that for your D3100 to AF they have to have built-in motors. The Tamron 70-300 Di VC USD (which has vibration control) is much better than the one you are looking at, for example.
