Tell me about Flickr

Can a royalty be in a different form then money?

Again that doesn't say they can sell it. It means that you grant them a royalty-free license. That means that they can use it as much as they like. Its not a one time license based on a single usage. It does not mean they can sell your photos.

Ah ok. I still wouldn't like people using my photos for whatever reason with me being advised, money or no money!

I set up a PBase account, it was pretty cheap and has great flexibility to gallery design and layout.

Flickr is so much more than just a place to store and show photos. Theres a really really really small chance that they would use your photos, and tbh I doubt they do. Its simply a legal protection.

All I wanted was a place to store and show photos!!!!!

I know what you mean though by the social and networking side of things.

I get the feeling joxby has to have been browsing Flubbr or some site. Theres no way its slow, confusing or in any way dull as ditch water. Thats an insult to the amazing photographers on there who inspire me daily.

You know very well I wasn't talking about the content, so don't gimme any of that "joxby insults every poster at Flickr" bull****
If you like it, the very best of luck, personally, I can live without all that crap, there are better online photo management sites that provide a decent platform if you are interested only in displaying you're work.

Alternatively-

Buy hosting > Build a site > Display photo's.... go to MySpace if you need social networking, do not pass GO, do not collect £200.

Pretty silly using MySpace for photography social networking though when Flickr does such a good job.

ever wished you'd never asked

I shall have a nosey round the sight in more detail but based on the phraseology used in the T&C's I dont think they are unreasonable and it would certainly serve at least one purpose, possibly several.

Thanks for the input everyone (y)

I have had nothing but good experiences with Flickr, i have made contacts in several contries and have met up with some of them whilst on holiday.

I often sell pictures as it gets my work "out there" for the world to see.

On the down side i have also had pictures stolen and used without my consent. Now i only post low res versions and my contacts are the only ones that can see the larger sizes.

Flickr can't sell your photos. However they are partnering with Getty in offering their whole stock of photos submitted by users as a searchable index for stock photography sale. The plan is to have this all in operation by Christmas 2008. This will allow Getty to sell your flickr photos, at proper stock prices, not a microstock.

There are some excellent street photography and film groups on flickr its the only place apart from here and a few other forums that film photographers are in abundence.Ive also been to my local flickr meet to try socialise with some of the local togs and had a great time its much more fun shooting with others I also met up with a guy to do some street stuff.

Yes there are stupid groups on there such as WOMENS HIGH HEALS etc i'm sure you could find something more stupid than that .The contact list thing is useful as you can click on contacts and it'll bring up the 5 latest uploads from the contacts you have added.

All the photos I upload are resized too 1024x768 anyway? as most others are some don't even have a choice to click a bigger size so i'm not too worried some meanie suit is going to use them.I also got my work published in a local paper called left lion as they contacted me through flickr looking for local stuff so its not all bad ;)
