Terrible Images With My Nikkor 85mm F1.8

Hi guys I hope you can help. I'm after ideas as to why images I took last night with my recently bought Nikon 85Mm F1.8D Af Nikkor Lens are unusable.

It was attached to my D7000. Here is what I was shooting:

An evening parade. Should be no problem for a 1.8 lens on a D7000 right? No, almost every image was blurred. I had the focus set to AF-C because I was shooting moving objects, and all focus points in use.

Does anyone have any idea why this lens let me down so badly?
 
Given they are moving objects and I am guessing you were hand holding, certainly the blurring on that sample looks like a little bit of movement blur. A 1/80 shutterspeed IS hand holdable, but when they are moving too, and a shallow focal range, its probably the main reason. There are sharp bits on there, so I suspect the lens is fine, but wider apertures do take a little practice.

Hmmm maybe that is it. I'm always ok with the 35mm at 1/80, and I guess this longer lens needed a faster shutter speed. What a basic error! Thanks Yv :thumbs:
 
what speed do you have handholding - 1/focal length (x cropfactor)

All very useful stuff! I was so stupid! I'm used to shooting these things with the 35mm F1.8 and didn't think about changing the settings for the new lens :bonk::bonk::bonk:

I think the picture you have posted is rather good considering it was at 1/80th sec.

Even walking slowly I would have thought at least 1/250th to be anywhere near sure of getting a sharp picture.

Rest assured David, when I go to the centre to watch tomorrow's parade I'll be using a much faster shutter speed! :thumbs:
 
As an aside, that's a mad DOF effect... it looks like she's been cut out and stuck on to the pic.

There is a light source, not sure if its flash [guessing it is], or if they were spotlighted in some way, but whatever it is has accentuated the DoF effect giving that almost 'pasted' look. Works nicely though.

They were illuminated by TV lighting PLUS I had a Speedlight on. :thumbs:

I like that, and would go for full f/1.8 - why not? I generally prefer smooth and non-obstructing backgrounds for such shots.

1/80s is tricky at 85mm. 1/160s should be much safer
 
Considering that,

DoF of this lens on a cropped body at f/2.5 at say 5m meters is about 300mm
The people are moving
You are shooting at 1/80 instead of say 1/160 which would be more suitable for this lens hand held on a cropped body.
The lens is not its sharpest at f/2.5
You could probably apply a bit more sharpening in post.

These images look pretty good to me and I would be surprised to see anything much better under the same circumstances.

Thanks for the help and comments everyone. As I said I am going down tonight to photography another parade. I will take on board everything that has been said :)
