if you are buying a lens from a second hand retailer online , is it the done thing to ask for a couple of test shots?

if so , what would be the best ones to ask for , was looking at the sigma 10-20

Thanks

No harm in asking.

Get them to shoot a distant target, so that there are less potential focus problems, and shoot four pictures with the target (road sign, number plate etc) positioned in the four corners of the frame, at lowest f/number (focal length doesn't matter much). Blow up the target section and compare.

The four images should all be equally sharp, or unsharp as they probably will be as this is a tough test. You're checking to see if you have a 'good copy' and that the lens hasn't been assembled mis-aligned, or dropped.

If one or more of the images is immediately noticeably worse than the others, don't buy it. They might all look pretty terrible, that's not the issue; equality is.
