Tests on a new lens

I normally just take lots of photos 
Joking aside I do take lots of photos, not for any technical merit as most end up in the trash, but things like books to check the focus accuracy, reliability and speed. Also take photos of a white wall or piece of paper at all f stops as different settings might show dust etc better than others

My biggest piece of advice is don't get too hung up on these tests, it can drive you insane trying to get things perfect, with that in mind have a look at these 2 resources for testing stuff. First i use Jeffrey's test chart, then use the photography life one to make sure my adjustments are right 
Make sure you read through both pages before attempting anything. It's possible that it may need some adjustment but that isn't the end of the world if it's within your camera's tolerances, just don't get too caught up on it (that bit is so important i've put it twice) make sure it works then enjoy it. I've wasted too much of my own time pratting about and getting myself stressed out over cameras that were fine to start with

Also just try as Chris says with the blank walls etc to test for dust maybe. Then go out and try it doing what you'd normally do with it, test charts are all well and good but not for everyone.

It's a 60d so no MFA which is what I'm worried about
the lens I picked up was a Tamron 17-50 2.8 for the princely sum of £85. The seller hadn't put which fit it was for in the advert title which I think helped with the low price.

Funnily enough, the lens i spent forever trying to get right on my D7000 was a 17-50, in the end it was fine and i was being a prat It developed problems further down the line but let's not go into that. Run the tests and see what you get before worrying about it, chances are it's fine
I'm assuming you've had it on the camera by now even for just messing about, has it behaved the way it should so far?
