I have been trying to find a site or utube on tethering a canon 1DS to a laptop. But I must be the worst searcher ever as I cannot find what i want.

Anyone know of any decents sites or utube's that explain it all in plain english,

Thanks in advance if anyone knows.

Should not be too difficult Dave.

First thing to do is make sure you have the driver installed. Go to the Canon website for the latest driver for the camera.

Fire up the software that came with the camera. Get the USB cable hooked up and off you go. :)

At least that's how I remember it from last time I did it (It was a while ago and at my age my memory is........sorry who are you again?.......)

He's a Canon user - what can he expect :D

As an aside - what's the reasoning MD??? Are you wanting to immediately show images to the buying parents???

God NO... !!!!!

I am thinking more about when i am practicing / trying new things . " the screen on the back of my camera is very small and I cannot zoom in on images either"

so it would be good to see what i have just taken at a good size.

Cheers .

My new problem is the bloody firewire cable " which I dont have." I have been searching for this 6pin firewire cable "IEEE1394a" Which is a male to male pin..!!

Now the one end should go into the camera fine . But the other end needs to be a usb to go into the pc..

Again I am looking for a cable " 6 pin firewire" to usb or trying to get a adaptor... ? There must be a easier way ..?

so the laptop doesn't have a firewire socket? Some of them have a smaller one - think it's a 4 wire connector. I think that Sony for example call them iLink sockets...

Problem is that firewire is a very fast transfer protocol - hence they use it for big files, moved quickly, like your 1Ds will be making. If memory serves me, the slowest variant of firewire is about the same speed as USB2's flat out max. , so usb to firewire converters are thin on the ground, at best. I'd suggest something like a firewire card for the laptops card slot - something like this

fingers crossed then :)

To be honest, I've always found firewire to be a pretty reliable way of moving files over - from maybe 10 years ago, using it to get .AVI files from a camcorder into Adobe Premiere - back then USB2 hadn't even been thought of, and it'd have taken 7-8 hours to get a hours video via USB, so it wasn't an option. Since then, I've made sure that my PC's and laptops have a firewire connector, just in case ;)

I maybe able to get a 6pin to 4pin a athat will cost about 3 quid and do the same job..

Shouldn't be a problem. Shoot a lot teathered with both 5D and 1Ds

You need to load the software from the disc that came with the camera. Can't remember which of the installed components you need ( I did it a long time ago) , but you definatly need Zoom Browser and EOS utility. There is a section in the manual on the CD that gives all the details, from memory it's around Page 22 ( could be wrong though).

Once installed you simply connect the mini USB cable to the camera and the other to the computer. Switch on the camera and after a few seconds you should get the EOS utility start screen pop up. Select the tethered option and off you go.

You can fire the camera from the utility as well as change ISO, exposure etc. Don't tend top do that myself, but if you want to you can.

Once the tethered program is running check the preferences. You can choose where the files are stored, and if you want to save images on the laptop and on the card or not.

The USB cable that comes with the camera is really too short to be of any use. So you'll need and extension. If you go for a 5M option, get the powered one. Bit more expensive, but does save the frustration of not getting a connection.

If you still have probs let me know and I'll dig up the instructions

The instructions are on page 23 of the manual...

Just a thought which version of the 1Ds do you have. I have a Mklll, it may be a bit different for other models.

I've been playing around with that recently and love it. You're not shooting tethered in the standard way. Normally (at least with Nikon, Canon may be different) when you shoot tethered, you take your shot, it gets sent down the USB and saved on the PC only.

Using DIYPhotoBits software, I shoot, it gets saved to the CF card, the software drags a COPY of it to the PC, and up it comes on the monitor right away (but you still have a copy on the CF).

Boy am I glad about that - thought I'd been wibble-ing on about firewire for nowt! I'vejust d/l'ed a copy of the manual, and it's deffo. firewire - canon model no. IFC-450D6
IFC-450D4, IFC200D6 or IFC200d4

Or a normal firewire cable with the right connectors on each end :)

Lol When I say i have a 1DS people nearly always think its a mk11 or mk111 But no i have the original...

I have ordered a 4 mtr 6pin to 6 pin firewire cable and a duel usb expesscard so that should do something... lol

Once i have them ill be back for programs and downloads.

I've never used it as I use a Mac (I use sofortbild like someone else mentioned above) but I suggested it to a mate who needed some tether software for his PC and he liked it too.
