Yes
I'm after some advice on the best way to tether my camera (canon 550d) to my desktop, I've made my own little studio in our lounge ( various backgrounds, off camera flashes , softboxes etc) to do some portraiture of family and friends and just for fun.... my desktop pc is in our living room, but it's about 7m from where I'll be shooting from I'm after advice on how best to connect ( what leads etc) and the best software to use (windows) I've got photoshop cs5....

I've also got a iPad and I'm aware of the eyefi card and app shuttersnitch and it would be nice to be able to teather to both, but I'm reluctant to buy the eyefi card

All advice welcome

Long USB cable and canon utilities installed..Thats how I tether to a laptop so I presume same thing..

yes it is and has a control panel.. as soon as you tether it should come on.. has loads of options... very good stuff.. I never installed it either until i wanted to tether :) Its the EOS utility you will be using

USB has a limit of 5m unless you put a powered hub or USB extender in the line. You may get away with 7-8m but be prepared to add a powered hub to extend the line every 5m.

Canon utility works every time. You can change settings on the camera, take delayed shots, timed shots etc. The other way is tethered to lightroom and then you trigger the camera from lightroom and the photo is displayed on screen. What you don't get is any control of the camera that way.

If you go beyond that, it still works, there is just a delay in the sending, so OP should be fine, really.

USB spec quotes 5m. We've seen drop off after that. Keyboards and mice are generally OK to push a little bit further but I'd never risk data transfer (camera/disk) further than that.

There is an option somewhere within the software to save a copy of the picture on the camera's card as well as transfer via USB. From memory, this is not checked by default. I would suggest checking it, just in case communications between camera and computer get disrupted at any time.

If you have Lightroom 3 you can tether with that, go to file/tethered capture connect your camera and then your ready to go once it has detected your camera.

Thats my sock said:

I've got lightroom but don't have it installed since I formatted my pc, to be honest I prefer using photoshop, I'm more familiar with the controls, one thing I did notice when using the eos utility is that you can register 3rd party software, I justed linked it to the bridge.exe

Viola they open in bridge, to be fair what I do is take a shot have a look on screen then adjust light positions power etc,

Its all good fun :)
