Text too small on my Mac

I have a 24 inch Imac which is about 2 years old. The one thing that annoys me is that the text, especially when using Mail, is so small. I have a default of 10pt Verdana which is fine when you're on the receiving end.

I don't want to modify the resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels, but i could do with the text in Mail being a bit larger. Anybody have a solution ?

Mail > Preferences > Fonts & Colours

You can change font sizes here, but it will only work with non-HTML emails, so not ideal.

Don't think there is any other way to change it completely other than via the resolution route.
 
It's not the "real" font size I want to change, it's the size it looks on the screen when I'm writing it. I did wonder about using the zoom facility as my screen is around 75cm - 100cm away from me.

Writing on here is fine though....
