Yes
After deciding to get back into photography after a break of 5 years or so I now have the following waiting for me at home -

Canon 450D
Canon Grip
18-55 IS lens
Canon 55-250
Canon 50mm 1.8
2 8GB memory cards
Lowepro Flipside 300
Redsnapper 283 with head
Various cleaning products

Not being able to use them until Friday is absolutely killing me!!

I managed to grab an hour or so with the camera last night.

Absolutely love it, I plan on shooting in manual and RAW, I have got used to what all the buttons on the camera do now and have a feeling I will outgrow it quite quickly, 5D mk2 may well be on order in the coming months :)

Yes the heavenly 5D mkII its my next upgrade, just remmber the only lens you have that will fit it is the 50mm! Still the kit of stuff (camera, grip, cards, lenses) will be a good starter kit for someone else, hope you have fun.

Out of interest why won't the other lenses work with the 5D? Also what sort of lenses do I need to be looking at that are compatible with the 5D?

They won't work because they're EF-S lenses, they're designed to only cover the smaller APS-C 1.6x sensor cameras.

Regular EF lenses are what you need for full frame.

As John says EF-S lenses wont fit the 5D as it will only take EF lenses, its the different mounts. You will be looking at the Canon EF range and Tamron, Sigma etc make ranges for EF fit mounts. You will find that over all the lenses will be more exspensive :'(. Also as the 5D is full frame alot of people say you will need the best quality glass to get the best results from its glorious sensor.

OK thanks guys!

I am guessing a £500 lens is classed as descent? That's the most I'd be prepared to spend on each lens to be honest.

then you are in for quite a shock XD

cant say what lens is best, it depends what for, a tilt shift would be useless for portraits or gig photography, but epic for buildings and landscapes...

The cheapest L's I think on the second hand market is the 17-40mm £400-£450 or the 70-200mm about the same (I think) :), the rest are considerably more exspensive.

The 7D would be the best E-FS mouth canon which has the same size of sensor as your 450D but better IQ and noise handling, Better auto focus, HD video, better casing blah, blah. You can google it :D

Think I will go for the 7D then, not immediately but in the next few months!

if the most you're planning on spending on a lens is £500, then i wouldn't even bother swapping to the 7D until you've really bedded yourself in with the 450D.

this is only my opinion, but i'd prefer to know the camera inside out, so you know it's limits and its capabilities in every scenario. Varying your lenses will give you more scope e.g. ultra wide angles, primes etc.. i wouldn't be beating yourself up over upgrading the body for the sake of a higher ISO or HD video. Just my thoughts on it

sorry... i forgot to say.... Enjoy your new gear!

And of course if you stay with crop sensors (450d, 550d, 40d, 50d, 60d, 7d etc) you can use ANY Canon lens, there area some cracking ef-s lenses out there as well!

The mounts are the same, the EF s lens will cause vignetting on a FF camera.

At the risk of being shot down...for the non-pro, enthuiasttic amateur who will probably not print over 10x8, does an FF and L lenses make that much difference as to jusyify the cost.
I've seen some stunning shots, shots I would aspire to, on here with cropped frame cameras.

Of courses there are excellent crop cameras, that's not in dispute!

It's just degrees of excellence, with the full frame bodies being at the top...

They do, the rear element protrudes further into the body. They physically fit on to ff bodies as the physical mount is the same, but press the trigger on an ff body and the mirror will hit the back of the lens causing damage.

Thanks Jim thats what I thought .
