Hi,

I see the other day that Nikon released this lens amongst other things...what is the difference between this lens and the previous model it replaces? I see that it mentions VR II over VR I which allows 4 stops of Image Stabilization but is there any other differences as there seems to be a large price gap between both lenses being sold and I'm interested to know what improvements this lens offers over the older model.

Mike.

They have added a lock to prevent zoom creep, which the earlier 18-200 models were prone to.

That's good for a tenner then - anything else to recommend it - or even explain why they bothered at all???

Its a very popular lens among "dedicated amateurs and semi pro`s" ( !) spoiled by zoom creep, which i fixed on mine for free with a rubber O ring.

I thought the old one had VRII?

Mine never suffered with it - maybe I don't zoom it enough to loosen it up

I thought they were VRII as well... have to check the paperwork when I get home...

Mine had it terribly - sent it to Nikon, who acknowledged the fault, but then couldn't offer a fix. I believe the answer was 'they all do it'. I got a refund on that one. Hopefully the new one is better in that respect. I guess VRII is an improvement (although I also thought the original had that too, maybe not). Does it have a nano coated element now, or is that reserved for 'pro' lenses?

The old one is VRII and they have the same optics.
The differences are, zoom lock, something I prefer not to have as I didn't like it on the sigma version, a name change, they have added II at the end of the name and the VR badge is now gold.
That's it, 3 minor changes, done.

Mmmm, doesn't seem to justify the hike really.

I was thinking that as well, OK so prices of camera related gear etc have gone up due to the poor exchange rate, however I can't see how this new version is worth "more" - I use that term loosely as it appears from what people have said there's not a great deal of changes apart from the lock and change of VR title.

I think I might invest in another lens instead!! :(

It looks like a sneaky way to hike the price to me really.
It is usually a highly regarded lens and the zoom creep is the most talked about problem, Allan's solution seems better though as the lock only works at 18mm.

I think they have put a new coating on the optics to stop ghosting and flare...that what i used the hood for

Right you are.
I guess I assumed that the old one already had the "Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC)" as I'd expect an upgrade to have a "n" nano coating.
