Hi,

Have you found any alternatives to these bags

I'm quite happy with all my LowePro cheap alternatives (GEM backpacks!)
and I was thinking about using the same strategy for new photo bag for checked in luggage.

All help appreciated.

Yep :)

I got a Calumet one. I do actually use a Tamrac bag for all my kit but also have a rolling case. It's not as robust as the TT one but then again it was £100 :)

Happily take it when I travel on trains etc, save me lugging the Tamrac.
 
Anything else? Any bags with rollers that will go as a check in luggage?

In all seriousness - the thinktank bags are the best rolling camera bags that you can buy, and well worth the extra money over anything that lowepro can produce imo. There is a certain... completeness to them, every single detail, no matter how minor, being carefully thought out, every single zipper or pocket having genuine, logical decisions put into them.

Pay the extra cash - it hurts, parting with over £200 for a bag, yes, but it's completely worth it, I'm inseperable from mine. There's a whole host of reasons that so many photographers rave about the airport international - whereas I don't think I've seen any professional evangelising the lowepro rollers.

edit: if you're used to GEM £30 backpacks... nuf said that lowepro's professional line's quality would blow you away, thinktank will just make you throw out your GEM bags and buy more thinktank ;)

edit: of course, mine gets rigorous use, very regularly, in all enviroments - i was dragging it through the snow at 5am for a job a few weeks back!. If you just do this for fun, then you might well find it easier to justify something a bit cheaper, but probably still 80% as good

I have both GEM and Lowepro backpacks and to be honest... there is not much difference :)
I've been using mine for 2 years and I have no complains.

I am just looking for a cheap alternative for putting my backpack in a traditional roller bag.
Lowepro bags are just that: an insert and a roller bag.

Think Tank product are top class, I'm sure. But it's not what I am looking for at the moment.

Have you looked at the Lowepro Pro Roller x300?
I have one and it's very good. It has lots and lots of compartments for everything that you'll need and you can use the handle as a camera/flash support as it has a tripod screw thread. Not only that, it's lockable and you can remove the actual case from the surround and carry it like a backpack.
