The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

tbf, thats a lot of fine detail and colour, its still way better than the Nikon G and Canon 1.8 lenses. Did you see the lens was like 370 after cashback from Amazon recently?
TBH I've never seen bokeh rendered like that from my Nikon lenses (YMMV). Yeah, it's a great price (y)

To be fair though it is a very bokeh unfriendly background, really a lot going on a bit like foliage is messy and bokeh unfriendly. It's easy to criticise bokeh like that but it should really only be judged against similar pictures taken with other lenses.

Have you never had the 85 f/1.8G? It is similar maybe even a little bit less pleasing.
Yeah I still own that lens, never noticed anything like that. Just had a look through my photostream to see if there's anything with a similarly 'cluttered' background and I'm still not seeing it tbh. I'll do some testing at some time with DVD's in the background out of curiosity (y)

I'm impressed with this cheap battery charger. It has a little display and the two batteries that came with it have a higher ma rating than my Sony battery. I'll have to see how long they last.

PS.
There's no mains to USB adapter with it though but I already had a few. It seems to work well.

I bought a RavPower twin charger and 2 battery pack for a similar price a year or two ago. I just use an old mobile phone plug to plug the USB into to charge it all. I also bought a RavPower power bank thing too.

I don't think it would have gotten much better with any other lens at same settings including the GM which supposedly has best bokeh of the lot.

A s*** background at close distance to the subject will always result in a s*** bokeh unless you use something with a shallower DoF.

My A7ii's up for sale in the classifieds if anyone is interested.

Wanted to keep both bodies (A7ii & A7Rii) but can't really justify it.

I bought an A7ii body specifically to go with my A7Riii, as a spare for backup and to stick a dinky adapted lens to shove in the bag when I'm carting round the A7Riii for wildlife.
We're all so different in how we use our gear, really interesting.

I think usage & value comes into it. If (if, or when...?) I ever upgrade from the A7 to maybe something like the A7iii I'd probably keep the A7 for a similar reason as it's value won't be worth selling.

I recently bought an Osprey Kamber backpack. So far I love it & the plan was to sell the Manfrotto Off Road as it's a £120+ bag. I've seen some on eBay not sell for £35 so for that reason I'd rather just keep it even if it's only used occasionally.

I don't know the release dates of the specialist Nikon lenses mentioned, but the original Minolta 135 STF came out in 1999 (and was continued by Sony when they took over, and they now make an E-Mount STF.

I'd be surprised if the concept came into being in 1997 and Minolta like it so much they designed and released a lend for it in just 2 years, so I suspect it was 'a thing', at least in Japan, for a lot longer than just the last 20 years.

There's an A7 and 35mm f2.8 in the classifieds.

All Christmas shopping done?

We walked miles today for the very last prezie, no taking the camera though as the scenic route was waterlogged so we had to stick to the roads :(

Not as good as the 85 1.8.

Just seen in the above review:

'While Sigma made improvements in speed in video, it’s still only average at best as far as speed and transition smoothness. The bottom line is, for still photography, the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 has very good autofocus. For video, AF performance is mediocre.'

Toss up between the Sigma and the Sony 35mm 1.8

IQ sigma, if you must have the 35 for video then the Sony.

Yes, 2.8 zooms and 85mm 1.8

If it were me I'd buy the Sigma and use the others for video if the lens will be used mostly for stills. Why not use the 2.8 zoom for video, its likely you'll stop down a bit anyway and the zoom will offer much more flexibility.

Unless you need the f1.4 aperture get the FE 35mm f1.8.

He might be talking about something other than a 35mm lens? Maybe... Dunno though.

PS.
I wouldn't have thought resolution was much of a problem.

Was thinking earlier what other improvements could Sony do with FW updates now to the a9
