The 55mm f1.8 is a cracking lens and I keep considering getting one...... its small and light, put it on the A7/9 bodies and you have a seriously small package for the IQ on offer.
Only downside is that it doesn't have the latest generation AF motors so no 20fps shooting on the A9. :D lol
Stick with what you have and then go all out next year on the 35mm and 50mm f1.4 lenses? ;)

which is more than enough for me. mind you, I've not seen too much advertised advising which lenses are capable of realising the full potential of the A9. is there an official list of which work with the a9 at 20fps and which don't?

i am sure newer lenses have better motors. but i never though FE55 was slow.

Regardless unless I have missed it (just as in this case) I don't see canon imposing such s**ty compromises to using their current lenses.
Not only do you have to dish out ££££ for A9 then you have to buy expensive lenses to use one of its main UPS.

Canon don't have anything that shoots above 12 fps

You'll find Canon recommends only their best lenses to be used with their Canon 5DS/R bodies ;) so unless you use those, anything less is a compromise.
Unfortunately quality glass costs money these days, you have to remember that neither Nikon or Canon offer 20 fps in their bodies or a decent silent shutter system, I do wonder if their Gold/Red/L lenses can cope too with such a high frame rate or higher resolution sensors on the horizon?

Nothing to do with fps.

beside 5DS won't automatically downsize files to 24mp because you haven't used a recommended lens. Not to mention majority of their current in-production lenses are on that list.

Your right but as mentioned, Canon don't offer 20 fps and its very unlikely they ever will with a traditional mechanical based system.....
Surely It is a compromise if you are being told by Canon to use L lenses to get the best out of the Canon 5DS/R, use their other lenses and you wont get the best out of it.... just like Sony recommend the newer lenses for their Sony A9 body to get the best. Both compromises if you decided to use the older lenses.

Correct and those who don't should do their research and ensure 15 fps is enough for them when attached to the Sony A9...... 15 fps is still pretty fast.....still 1fps faster than the Canon 1Dx II ;)

As I already said most of their in-production lenses are on that list i.e. not just L lenses. even the cheapo 40mm STM which is selling on this forum for £70 is on that list (p.s that lens is damn sharp)

the point isn't its still 1fps better than canon, the point is they need a system that works well together. Sony sucks big time at doing that and its full of bandages and patches that doesn't work well. In the end its all flashy marketing. They have built a paper dragon with no meat in it i.e. only good on paper with full of compromises.
**ALL** Sony FE lenses are new. Its not decades old like canon 50mm f/1.4 or 100mm f/2 (p.s. also on recommended lenses list).

"Flashy marketing" are the key words. I guess it then comes down to who feels they 'need' the 20fps to get results or see the fact that £1500-2000 for a lens is an acceptable price.

In their defence they have cheaper FE85/1.8 and FE50/1.8 on that list too. Though I wonder how FE50/1.8 which gets slated for rubbish AF can make it to that list but not others like FE35/2.8 and FE55 :confused:

Yes but the majority of the lenses they recommend are L lenses, its not uncommon for non L lenses to be sharp enough for higher resolution sensors.
Even Sony makes lenses sharp lenses which are not the G Master line.
My point is, its still a compromise to be told/recommended by Canon to use only certain lenses with a body........ even if they had only 1 lenses in their entire line-up that wasn't recommended for the Canon 5Dsr its still a compromise for that single user who owns that lens and wanted to use it. :D

And that is exactly how both Canon and Nikon generate their business "Flashy marketing".... how else are they making money when they haven't shown any real innovation for a very long time.
There are plenty of options out there, it comes down to your budget, requirements, wants and needs. :D

No the majority are **current in-production** lenses which includes L lenses and many others non-L lenses too. Have you even looked at the list on that website? Do you actually want me to copy and paste to prove you wrong.
There may be one or two *current in-production* lenses not on the list (though I doubt) but Sony have half their current lenses out of that list which are all new, current and in production.

May be they delivery what they market (even if its below par) instead of hidden compromises.

Of course they do, as every other person/company the world over generates sales. I guess the issue is the number of caveats attached to one of the A9's flagship sales points of 20fps.

I thought everyone wanted ultimate quality so would be shooting uncompressed RAWs, which means 12fps for example.

I could even accept that, but not being able to use half the lenses at full spec which are all rather new is simply ridiculous.

Edit - I'd also agree that the difference between compressed and uncompressed in actual usage is so small that there's no point in shooting uncompressed but I was commenting in relation to those wanting "ultimate quality" and accepting the price for it.

I agree that the strangest omission is the FE55/1.8. I'd have thought that should be able to match their flagship body.

Hidden compromises? What hidden compromises? Nothing is hidden.... its all available to read freely on Sony/Canon's own webpages ... I have already posted the Sony lens compatibility chart in the same way you posted a link to the Canon 5DSR chart........ I just needs somebody with common sense to accept that when spending the best part of £4500 on a body that its wise to check what lenses will work with it! lol :D

I would expect all native lenses to work equally well with it apart from may be specialised lenses like macro and that STF. Like I said **ALL** FE lenses are new. That list shouldn't exist in the first place.

The same theory could be applied to most manufacturer bodies out there in combination with their marketing but its not hidden at all, as said, its usually written in plain English on their own literature, you just need to be proactive about it and look ...... if you really feel that Sony has not met your expectations you could give them a call or Watchdog :D lol
It doesn't sound ridiculous, yes I would be annoyed IF I really needed 20fps on the 55mm f1.8 but its forward progress by Sony, they probably didn't even decided on a 20 fps body back when the A7 and 55mm f1.8 was designed/made... technology moves on and sometimes certain elements are outdated quicker than others.
That doesn't mean the Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8 is rubbish..... come'on, do you really need 20fps at a 55mm focal length? :D
 
Oh I forgot to add, you can shoot 20fps if using AF-S mode... or so it says... maybe..... lmao :D
