Yes, they do, but when one tries to 'do something' with them then it all falls apart just like it does with older compacts and bridge cameras.

Have you tried raw? I’ll see if I can get some good examples of SOOC jpegs vs processed raw just to show how bad the jpeg processing is. To my eyes the jpeg processing gives the kind of look you get when you crop an image way too much to the point it’s degrading the image and making detail look ‘blocky’. And then there’s the OTT HDR. You used to be able to turn this off on the iphone but some bright spark decided it would be a good idea to stop you from being able to :rolleyes: At least with raw you don’t have HDR, and with ProRaw you can choose how much (if any) ProRaw processing is applied.

Well... I've been looking at pictures of the celebrations all over the world. I'll have a wine glass full of cider and no more and see in the new year.

The last two years have been hard here but there are things to be grateful for too.

Just been having a nosey at the Canon RF range and all the lenses I’d want are still mega expensive but one lens in particular that seemed on face value to be way overpriced is the 100-500mm at £3k :eek: I guess it must have exceptional IQ as it’s only f7.1 at the long end too :thinking:

Ta but I don't think I'll be getting a new phone until this one dies or gets lost or stolen. If/when I need a new one I might see if I can get one which shoots raw :D

Recently Amazon had them at £2400 ish plus a £185 (ish) coupon. There is also £200 cashback (and Canon accept Amazon) so worked out a touch over £2k. I thought about it too long and missed the offer but it does seem to be an exceptional lens although I don't think I would swap my 200-600mm for it.

I'm sure it must be for the price, just seems odd that it's f7.1 when you're getting 600mm zooms at f6.3.

Where did you guys get your 200-600mm cover from? I did have a cover for my old Tamron 150-600mm from outdoorphotographygear.co.uk but couldn't get on with using the switches through the clear plastic window, so would probably prefer the switches accessible through a cut out window.

Mine came with one (used lens from here) but I'm pretty sure I chucked it during my recent move as I never use them.

Don't you find the white / grey colour of the lens frightens off the birds as you are easily spotted, that is assuming you use your lens for wildlife.

I basically only use my lenses for wildlife and neither the 200-600mm or 100-400mm frighten off birds (that I have noticed, although obviously I can't guarantee that). Same goes for my Canon L lenses.


Hmmm, now I'm wondering if I could get closer with a lens coat :D

It's funny how the little seemingly insignificant comments can sometimes catch attention.

I've just read that I have too much time on my hands and whilst this is jokingly said and I get that I'm mildly annoyed at this being said even jokingly as this is very far from the truth. I was up till 2am this morning and up again at stupid and still dark o'clock this morning and that's the norm. Too much time on my hands? I wish. The forum has been an escape for me though and for that, thanks all.

It's not exactly a preset as it doesn't alter the sliders at all but it lives in the preset section of LR. I downloaded 5 demo one's to try and they are extremely accurate imo and non destructive, quite expensive though but it's a one off so I think i'll go for it.

Cool. I'll take a look thanks. I've used actual 'presets' before & they are just crap imo

Hence I've just done stuff myself to what I like & saved those.

The VSCO ones were good, however I’m yet to find a film preset that I like for all types of images and most often just end up reverting to my own ‘natural’ preset.

It’s a lens that very much interests me, but it won’t if that price tag is right :eek: It will also depend on the weight.

It will definitely help for that, and I guess with modern camera high ISO capabilities manufacturers are looking at saving weight over light gathering.
 
Hi All.

A little guidance needed please. I have an A7Rii and am considering a Tamron 50-400 to go with it, the plan being to run it on crop mode to give 600mm effective for wildlife (I am too lazy to carry a bigger heavier lens to give a real 600mm). It got me to wondering if I would be better chopping the A7Rii in for an A6600 - the advantage being a few more pixels (v the A7Rii on crop mode) but then I wonder if the A6600 would be as good at high iso as the A7Rii? (as background I currently shoot wildlife on an RX10iv which is great in good light but rubbish at high iso...)

Tried the Tamron 50-400 on the A7 IV, the AF wasn't great and once the light dropped it was pretty useless just before dusk. I've also had a little play with the Tamron 150-500 indoors at the photography show and that seemed better to me but it's a heavy beast. There was a Sony 200-600 in the classifieds recently for a similar price to the 50-400, probably a safer bet if you need the reach.

Thanks for the reply. I'm absolutely certain the 200-600 woud be better than the 50-400 but it's my own commitment which is lacking - I'm just a casual shooter and I doubt I'd use something of that size and weight...

Difficult to say regarding ISO as you're cropping into the A7Rii sensor. I can't say for sure but I'd hazard a guess that the A6600 will have better AF performance.

There are other lenses to consider that don't weigh as much as the 600mm reach lenses, the Sony 100-400mm and the Sigma 100-400mm. Out of the three the Sony is the best, but is also the most expensive.

Edit: As an alternative have you considered micro 4/3, you can get the 100-400mm lens giving you 200-800mm. Pair it with something like the EM1-III and you've got a great combo.
