The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I like the look of the 20-200, have you tried the 25-200?
No, I had it's predecessor i.e. tamron 28-200mm. The 28-200mm maintained it's aperture rather well, it was f4 till 85mm and f4.5 till 110mm

The new 25-200mm stops down very quickly so loses a lot of it's benefit over 20-200mm

Another review of the Viltrox 26mm f2.8.

Some of those pictures in the review part of the page look pretty bad but I suppose it's only in specific instances.

I was briefly interested but I have the Sony 24mm f2.8 G so the only benefit would be smaller size but probably not so much to matter and more flare and probably lower image quality. For anyone who doesn't have a small lens already this might be worth a try.

Nice excuse to post a picture from the last time I took the 24mm G out.

35-100/105/135 isn't really that great as a walkabout lens IMO unless going somewhere that doesn't need a wideangle. I've had a 35-105 previously, and while OK in the right circumstances, it lacks flexibility.

I am tempted by the Sigma 20-200 after looking at some reviews, gives me wide angle and decent zoom plus I can go into S35 if I need more reach.

There seem to be a lot of lenes that I didn't know existed. This is another...

Googling tells me it's under £700 grey.

I've hung on to MFT but I hardly use it these days, the main uses being for the 45-150 and 100-400mm lenses which I hardly use. Something like this could maybe replace my MFT kit, half the reach but with better IQ and I could crop.

Anyone know anything about this lens?

I have one and like it. But I'm easily pleased! ;)

It's versatile.

Thanks.

As you might know I like compact kit but the Panasonic GX80 and 100-400mm isn't exactly small. I don't and wont use a long lens much but I want one for the few times a year I want one and the IQ I get out of the Panasonic kit especially the 100-400mm is disappointing me.

Sony with 50-400mm v Panasonic with 100-400mm.

I’m eagerly and impatiently awaiting delivery of my first camera, a Sony A6400.
Will be primarily used for automotive photography.

Looking for some budget prime lens recommendations to help get me started and learning on this new endeavour.

I do have a Sony 50mm f1.8 lens ready and waiting, which I understand will function as a 75mm lens on APS-C cameras.

In terms of the effective focal length yes it will give the field of view of a 75mm. It will still give you the light gathering of an f1.8 lens, but depth of field will be the equivalent of f2.5 on full frame.

When you say automotive photography are we talking static shots at shows etc or on track action?

Welcome :)

If the space is available I much prefer automotive stuff at those 'longer' focal lengths - I'm not really a fan of ultrawide or even wider than 35mm tbh unless the car is part of a scene. I will normally go 85mm and 35mm if it's busy or tightly packed and I might want more documentary/interior shots.

I use 35mm and 50mm as it’s very rare I can use longer than this at the shows I go to due to space and ‘ignorant’ people ;)

I can always use crop mode and get 75mm f1.8 eq. I do sometimes wonder why I keep my 85mm, it gets used once in a blue moon.

Thank you.

I’d say 80-90% static, 10-20% action/racing.

As Lee and I have just mentioned location might dictate which focal length you might use. A longer focal length means that you get more background compression as you’re further away from the subject, a wider angle lens pushes the background further away as you’re shooting closer to the subject.

Are there any decent cheaper lenses I should be considering?
I’ve heard great things about the Viltrox 25mm

At one time, Sigma was the go-to for APSC primes I think with some big aperture options. These days, there are a lot more options with Viltrox appearing to be pretty good value for money (I think) - 25mm (ish) would be a nice option next to the 50mm you already have.

For track action/racing, is the Sony G lens still the one to go for guys? The 70-350mm or something? I know it used to get great reviews again for size, weight, cost vs performance.

**I have always shot Sony full frame, so everything I say is through what I've read/heard rather than actual experience :)

Thank you. Heard great things about Sigma lenses too, but they are more expensive and I ideally don’t want to spend that much just yet. Not until I’m better versed in this world.

Here's a list of all the lenses for Sony e-mount, there's always the option of buying used or grey market if you want to save money.

I've never used Viltrox, TTartisan, or Laowa but I've heard good things about them. Tamron and Sigma do a number of solid lenses. Samyang lenses render really nicely, but QC can be hit and miss, however they're definitely worth considering. I've used a number in the past and ben happy with them.

I always found that as well in my car show days go pretty wide so you are close to the car and people aren't walking in front of you all the time.

I'm off to the Chatsworth Car Show tomorrow, I'll see if I can take any at 75mm eq ;)

Done that one many times. Gold Cup at Oulton park was always my favourite used to do the full weekend camping there, many great memories.
