The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I found it for £4860 UK with 5 year warranty so have gone for that. From my experience I've had trade in reduced by 10% for grey cameras so taking this into account along with the extra 2 year warranty I thought it was worth the extra.

Stephen, good point I'm normally a major culprit of this, however I've now had my A1 over 3 years and, famous last words, I can't see what else I'd need/want from a camera ;)
Where offers less for grey import trade ins.

If you have the A1 already why go for the II? Is it enough of an update?

WEX reduced my A7RV by just over 10%, and my A9 II was reduced by something similar but I can’t remember who I sold that to.

Try MPB I've traded in countless bodies and lenses with out issue.
Yes I have traded in with MPB with no issues,
I don't know if WEX still reduce the quote for grey kit but I've never noticed anything to show WEX used kit for sale was grey or a price difference in UK vs grey kit they sell

What would you do?

A1 II from Panamoz with 3 year warranty £4100
A1 II from UK with 5 year warranty £5100

Is an extra 2 year warranty and having an official UK model worth the extra £1000?

WEX Roadshows are offering 20% off selected Sony gear, but you have to be at an event in person to get the deal. Not sure which items had teh 20% off!! Might be worth ringing Wex and asking, and then getting to a roadshow if it suits. I think nearest one to you is Nottingham Sat 15th Aug

That's my thinking as well, they give you less but don't appear to list it as grey.

I’m sure I have seen it mentioned in a couple of their listings to the effect that the product was an import. Can’t remember the exact wording.

Possibly. I wasn’t looking at upgrading the A1, I'm really happy with it, but with the sensor issue I started looking around at what I could get and one shop offered £800 more than any other shop and all of a sudden the gap between the two wasn't as great. Given that I had a play with the A1-II this week and preferred the grip, along with the multi angle screen (which can just tilt like a regular tilt screen) and 3 stop better IBIS I thought I'd go for it. There's a few other things like the better EVF refresh rate, higher res LCD screen, and pre-capture but these aren't features that would sway me one way or the other.

I was going to buy from Panamoz but there's 10% off Sony this week and the 5 year warranty.

Where have you seen the 20% off? All I can see is "exclusive one day deals"?

I was at the Manchester Roadshow yesterday, for a couple of talks, amazingly I didn't buy anything...........................

You only get to see the deals by rocking up.

What's ironic is that Wex state that they do not knowingly buy in grey items. I've just found the email conversation and they actually reduced my A7RV by 18% not 10%. Also, they refused a lens saying there was mould despite two other stores saying it was mint, I subsequently sold it as new to MPB.

Ahh OK, I doubt they'd tell me beforehand then but it's worth an ask.

Edit: sent an email would save me a further £300 if the A1 II was part of the 20% off deals, assuming of course that's 20% off the current price and not 20% off the RRP.

Don't get me started on Wex, let's just say I refuse to use them at all.

I used to think like this, I had a list of companies I wouldn't deal with due to bad experiences but recently I've changed just a bit and I'll now deal with those companies if it's in my best interest and I'll avoid them if there's a chance they can do bad again. For eg. I'll buy from Wex if they have the best price but I will never ever send kit to them to be evaluated as there's a probability they'll offer a price and then reduce it for dubious reasons. They are IMO the We buy any car of the camera world.

What is the concensus of opinion of the Sony 24-105 f4 lens, for general/landscape photography? Asking for a friend.

I think they should shorten the name by deleting the -105 and they should make it f2.8 rather than f4. That'd make it much more understandable.

24mm f2.8 rolls off the tongue much better and is much more understandable than 24-105mm f4.

It's a bit of a Ronseal lens, it does what it says on the tin, but there's nothing special about it. It's sharp enough for landscape to get good detail. I personally prefer wider, and for a general lens prefer the 20-70mm f4, I can always crop. However I generally prefer 16-35mm for landscape.

It's a really solid, reliable walk-about lens with adequate quality and is a bit heavy. Had mine since 2018, and it's the one I always take when I travel. It doesn't really do bokeh, it's not sharp like my 50 f1.2GM, but it's noticeably better than many older enthusiast zooms in the same kind of focal length range.

The Viltrox 85 1.4 Pro lens, does anyone own it?

Seems to get ultra sharp images for under £375 but at 800g it seems like a non starter when you compare it against the current competition.

Probably all metal construction, cheaper but heavier.

The rumour site says there's a new Pergear 50mm f1.4...

There's a review here...

It looks pretty poor and probably worse than any film era 50mm I've had except the Takumar maybe, but it has the advantage of mounting directly onto the camera without an adapter.

I remember the Pergear 35mm f1.4 was pretty good in some respects such as performance wide open but pretty poor in others such as flare resistance. I also remember thinking that there was no way that lens was really f1.4 and I wonder if the same is true of this new 50mm. I haven't used my manual lenses much recently but if I was still in the market for Sony mount MF primes I think I'd pass this new 50mm by as it really does look quite poor. Shame it looks quite a bit worse than the 35mm f1.4. The only advantage that I can see over a film era 50mm is that it's in Sony mount. Everything else looks poor to awful.

After an extended holiday to Nikon, I'm back with Sony. :)

I'm still getting to grips with setting up the camera properly, but here's a quick shot with the rather nice Sony FE 40mm f/2.5 G along with a 100% crop. Such a compact lens, perfect for walking around with and insanely fast and sharp eye autofocus, it certainly makes things a lot easier and I can focus on getting the photo.

Good stuff Graham.

The 40mm has been a favourite of mine since I got it.

I'd been thinking about a polarising filter for a while with the Nikon, but obviously it would now be for the FE 40mm. Can anyone recommend one that isn't insanely expensive but still decent?

I use this one along with their ND filters and really like them.

I like the idea of a magnetic one, would this mean if I got a grad ND it could make it easy to rotate rather than getting one of those adapter things for a rectangular one?

Yes, you can also stack them with polarising filters too. :)

Cheers. I have some decisions to make. I also need to see if there's a lens hood in the box which I might have missed as apparently there is supposed to be one!
