Had my first attempts at silhouettes last week, this seems to be about the best one. Tweaked a wee bit in tattyshop.

I think it lacks any real punch and would be interested to hear ideas on what I could do better next time in camera and in pc. Incidentally, my friend was set up next to me with his 40D (I have a 400D) and with the same settings exactly his brought out the reds MUCH better than mine - admittedly he had a better lens on as well, but is this normal?

Can't answer your question RE reds, especcially if your settings are identical. With regards to the photo, looks like the horizon is WAY OFF to the left. yet your bell is straight. Also, I think the image would be stronger if the BELL rope did not make contact with the silhouette of the land.

Thanks - wasn't sure whether to straighten for clouds or bell, chose the latter. And totally agree with you about the rope...

I'd have straightened for the horizon which is much more likely to be right than a bell some human stuck in the ground. The difference in reds may just be a question of camera technology being different.

Yes, you're right of course. Him upstairs tended to get his horizons straight so I should have corrected for that.
