My Nikon SLR gear doesn't get much use these days as I have less time to get out and about, so I'm thinking I need a compact I can carry with me most of the time. It also needs to be something SHMBO can use.

Some of the usual contenders come to mind, Canon S120, Olympus ZX-2, Lumix LX7, Lumix DMC-LF1 (with viewfinder), and Pentax MX1. The Sony RX100 seems a little expensive, and probably more than I need, which is:

Fits in a jacket pocket
Quiet shutter release
Minimal release/shutter lag
Good low light performance (including autofocus)
Flash that works fairly well (for a compact)
RAW, and good jpeg performance
Good video capabilities
Touchscreen not essential
Controls that don't easily get changed by accident (like when in a pocket, or bag)
Fairly robust

Nice to have:
Flash hot shoe
Adjustable screen
Ability to use filters
Built in lens cap
24mm at the wide end

I'm tempted by the Canon thinking I'd have it in my pocket most of the time (when SWMBO doesn't have it in her bag).
The Olympus seems nice, as does the LX7, but only 28mm at the wide end, and the ZX-2 seems a bit bulky?

Any suggestions?
 
You might also look at the Fuji X range. I have the X10 and X20, and find them ample for my modest needs.
 
Just get an RX100M2 easily the best compact camera.
 
If Currys/PCWorld have any left, the Fuji XF-1 ticks most of the boxes.
 
Thanks for your suggestions. I almost went for the Canon but wanted better video capability. In the end I went for the Sony RX100M2. I'm probably going to replace the wrist strap with one that is more secure, and be careful not to drop it at all, especially with the screen tilted. Now looking for a case and screen protector.
 
It maybe missing a few of your essential criteria but if ultimate image quality is your goal dont ignore the sigma merrills.

Price-wise the original RX100 is becoming affordable, especially second hand. It's about a half-stop or a stop worse off than the Mk2, but makes up for it by being even slimmer. I've used a few compact camera, and this one is by far the best I've experienced.
 
I bought the rx100 mk1 to sit alongside the d800.

Brilliant bit of kit. Got for under 300 new. Decent flash, decent low light performance, manual controls and raw. Best of all, fits in the pocket!!

Yep. I love the Mk2, but despite slightly better low-light performance, part of me still wishes I'd gone for the Mk1. I can live without the swivelly screen, and although mine goes easily in a pocket, being able to stick in a jeans pocket (like the Mk1) is nicer!
