The Canon 7D and the non improvement over the 40D

There is something a bit weird about both images. The smeary softness all over place. It seems in focus, but like there was vaseline all over glass. I could believe the first pic was due to TC, but plain 400mm f/5.6L is an absolutely incredible glass.
Do you put some cheap filters on top, and how do you process your shots?

I could believe they are a bit noisy, but this is like ISO 3200 with tons of NR applied (smooth and devoid of details). I have seen some great A3s from 7D, so while its not a 1D it shouldn't be a write off

Thanks, they are both straight out of camera raw conversions... I am able to process fine, as I mentioned above softness has been attributed to incorrectly seated mount on the body... This has had a dramatic improvement on sharpness
