Imagine you have a budget of £200 - £450 per lens and your looking for the lenses listed below, you want a lens where you get a lot for your money (e.g. £90 delivered for a nifth fifty is pretty bloody good for the quality pictures it produces...) What would be YOUR lens of choice for the following:

Wide angle:
Portrait:
Zoom:
General walk about lens:
 
Been there lusted after the L series saw the price went shopping elsewhere for my canon 40d.

Wide = tokina 11-16mm cost me £479 (was worth it though) 479
Portrait = nifty fifty 45 / Want a go with the canon 100mm macro
zoom = canon 70-200 F4 non IS (everyone should have a 70-200) 370
general = tamron 15-50 as the canon equivalentcost to much and this was just as sharp. 250 ish (was over 3 years ago)

The tamron and tokina are the only two I bought new the rest are all s/h and were nice and cheap
 
For APS-C..

Wide angle: Stretch to the Canon 10-22.. just do it.
Portrait: Canon 85/1.8 (h&s)
Zoom: assuming you mean tele zoom.. Canon 70-200/4L
General: Tamron 17-50/2.8

Fullframe:

Wide: Samyang 14/2.9 or stretch to Canon 17-40
Portrait: Canon 85/1.8 again
Zoom: Canon 70-200/4L again
General: Canon 28-135 IS for zoom, 35/2 for prime
 
I have a 40d and if I don't go FF which is something I am considering quite seriously this is the kind of set up I am considering in time. Maybe tweak the 70-200 for a Sigma f2.8

On a 4od

Wide i have a Sigma 10 - 20 that i'm very happy with
Portrait My Tokina 100mm 2.8 macro is fast becoming a favourite
Zoom 70 - 200 f4 next on the list
general - sigma 18 - 200 yes its a super zoom and has its limitations but as a walkabout lens i don't think it can be beat for the money
 
You could always combine a portrait and walk about lens and get a canon 24-70f2.8L so instead of spending upto £900 on two spend it on one and get a great bit of glass.

Wide angle: Sigma 10-20 (i have one and its brilliant)
Portrait: 50mm f1.4 or 85mm f1.8 (only seen good things about the 85mm)
Zoom: Sigma 70-200f2.8 (seen a few on here for around the £450 mark)
General walk about lens: Sigma 24-70f2.8 or similar
 
Portait does I'd say cover the most ground of those catagories, the best focal lenght is going to depend alot on what kind your after(full body or head and sholders) and what shooting distance your after.

Personally I went with the 35mm f/2 and 100mm macro, the former is pretty cheap with good IQ wide open and allows for full body shots indoors while the latter does good double duty outdoors where having to stand that much further back isnt much of a problem.
 
What would I do? Probably not buy 4 lenses. Get the 17-55 f2.8 and the 70-200 f4 and then if I really wanted something faster stick £80 into the 50mm f1.8. You will have a lot of overlap buying 4 lenses like that and the above kit will give you a good start and let you work out where you lack. Wide angles I think are a bit of a 1 trick pony and 17mm (28mm FF equivalent) is rather wide anyway! You can always stitch together a number of pictures rather than have one, distorted picture anyway! ;)
