hello peops, i just thought id share my 2cents from today.

I have been asked by a friend to shoot his girls christening tomorrow and ive not done anything like that before so i jumped at the chance for some practice lol

anywayz i have the canon 1000d and 18-55 non is kit lens and was thinking this lens just is not going to cut it, so i braved asking a neighbour if he had some decent glass i could borrow!! and he was nice enough to lend me his 17-85 usm ;)

what a stunning lens that is compaired to my kit lens lol, ive not used any other glass on my dslr before and im blown away.

i have been wanting a nice lens for a while now and after only playing with this lens this evening im already inlove!! lol i cant wait to get out with it tomorrow.

such a shame i have to give it back :( lol
 
If you think that is stunning then try a 50mm f/1.4... I was absolutely blown away by the quality on my 450d - and my 1Ds - pin sharp at almost any aperture, the colours are incredible, as is the contrast. I only had to apply quarter the amount of sharpening that I did with the kit lens.
 
To be honest when I shot Canon I far preferred the IQ of my kit lens to my 17-85, the VR and USM was obviously far better as was the build quality but I wasn't struck too much by the actual images.
 
Try a 17-55mm IS, that is another big leap up in quality

There again wish I hadn't when I saw the price of the damn thing
 
I also have the 1000D however mine came with the 18-55 IS lens. TBH though the 18-55 isn't to shabby a lens. Suffers in some areas but is very versatile.

Speaking of nice glass though, I bought myself the 70-200 F4 L at the beginning of the year. Reaction - WOW!!!!

The Image Stabilisation on the 18-55 IS is Canon's latest I think. With that lens I took a sharp picture at 18mm with an exposure time of 1 second. I could get frequent keepers at 1/6 second, which is pretty good.

The thing I liked about the kit lens was how light it was. On an ungripped rebel body, the combination is so light (especially when you've been carrying around a 1 series all day) and is all part of the attraction I think of low end budget kit.
