The Fabulous Fuji X owners thread

It’s not really one focal length with 40MP and cropping, and you can always (usually) shoot a 2 or 3 shot pano for something wider.

Personally I find it quite liberating just working with a single focal length, as you get into the zone of knowing the field of view before you even raise the camera, and if you can get any FOMO out of the way, you’ll come home with an interesting array of shots - you may even surprise yourself.

I used the X100F (with no converters) for several travel trips and never regretted it. Nowadays I’d take either of my Q3s (but not both) and still enjoy the experience

I think the focal length/FOMO thing seems to be very easy or very difficult for the majority of people. Like you David, I can do it quite easily usually - actually, it's usually should I take the 35mm film camera with me rather than another [digital] focal length :ROFLMAO:

I went to Weston at Easter for the big car show. Met a few mates of mine there. Now, I usually go with 85mm in an ideal world but knowing it would be busy I took the A7Riii & Voigtlander 40/1.2 which I shot in both FF & APSC mode to get a bit closer. One of my mates had a body & 3/4 lenses with him plus a selection of filters in a big backpack! "Just in case" ;)

Likewise, I have just taken the X100v on a few trips when travelling light.

I'm doing a photo walk at the weekend, and even though it is a dedicated photography thing, I'll probably still just take the X100v.
When I did the Fujifilm photo walk in Oxford there were a couple of guys shooting with X100s.

I'm going to be going to Scilly next year as it's my wife's 50th: since it's her choice of destination and her birthday photography will be very much taking a back seat - she doesn't really like it when we're out together if I've got my camera. I'm still taking it, but I'm be sticking to the 27mm F/2.8 as it's small & discreet, and will be good for quick shooting.

We've recently lost my stepdad. Because they didn't do much in general the past few years especially, trying to find (more recent) photos isn't easy - TAKE THAT CAMERA (y)

And, take one of those cheap tiny table top tripods for selfies together too.

My pleasure. IF, and it's a big IF, you can find a processing style that you're happy with and works for most things you can save it as a preset and just apply that on import, this way it cuts editing time down and it's not a lot different to shooting with SOOC Jpegs.

My workflow is import the file (adding a preset for raw) > crop and adjust exposure as necessary > export. If I'm doing more 'serious' stuff then I may dodge and burn too, and in the case of portraits add some skin smoothing but that's about it.

I can't remember which Sony camera you have, but Sony have come on along way with their colour science and for me they're now one of the best for me, I probably prefer the raw file colours from Sony over Fuji, but of course with Fuji they have their film profiles that can be added. Don't forget though in Lightroom it's just Adobe's interpretation and they're not exactly the same as the camera and so you should be able to come up with something similarly close with Sony files.

I'll not get rid of my Sony gear as I like the look and detail that full frame offers, but at the same time I'm not going to get rid of my X100VI as it's great fun to use and for day to day stuff the image quality is more than good enough. I do also fancy the X-T5 (or X-T6 when it's announced) paired with the 16-50mm f2.8-4.8 as a relatively lightweight travel option but then wonder if I should just use the X100VI, I've never gone away with just one focal length before :runaway:
I’ve a feeling I could be in a very similar situation with regards finding a preset I like and sticking to it, especially after seeing your examples above, I can’t believe how much of a difference it could make from shot to shot. I’ll give it a try though and see how I get on.

personally I’m really happy with the image quality etc from Sony full frame as well (I’m currently using A7riii) it’s more of a hankering to find that film like look without as much of the complications and experimentation of film. Having originally come from m4/3 I don’t think I could go down in sensor size as a one camera solution either.

I’ll definitely focus more on the editing side going forward and go from there, I suppose the other option is to shoot b&w more often for that film type look with slightly easier editing but I’m finding not everything works well in b&w lol.

Best of luck if you do decide to stick to one focal length for a holiday etc, It’ll be interesting to hear how you get on.

I'm not sure whether I prefer editing and the look from the A7Riii files or the X100f files. I certainly don't think I dislike any of them, but they are different. The A7Riii files certainly pop more and often have a nicer look to them but that's usually down to other things rather than editing.

I'll definitely be taking it, I've already told her that. I just don't want her feeling like the whole thing is just a photography trip for me.

And I'm sorry about your stepdad Lee.

I’ve been enjoying just having the one focal length, but it is FOMO when I go away as I think to myself that I need flexibility to get the best shots I can as it’s unlikely we’ll go back to the same place.

I guess until I try I’ll never know.

Its actually the other way round, you miss out on loads of shots, you would have found while using a single focal length lens, as you've been distracted by the instant shot you can take with your zoom (or arsenal of lenses), having taken that gratification shot, you just move on......potentially missing out on a wealth of 'interesting' shots. You also gain in travelling light, and having less decisions to make. Any shots I can't take because of my equipment limitations I just bank in my brain, I probably wouldn't have got round to printing them anyway so what does it matter!

I'd rather come home with a selection of shots that I've discovered than a set of typical tourist shots. Obviously YMMV

Using an X100 series camera in this way is where it really excels, as fundamentally its fun to use, its relatively small and discrete, you take shots quickly thus not disturbing the flow of the holiday. Its got enough bells and whistles to keep the average techie amused, the built in ND filter is very useful in sunny destinations, and using the OVF the battery can last for a long time (asuming you can refrain from rear screen pixel peeping!!).

I've done

Isle of Mull - original X100
Tuscany - original X100 (I did also have WCL - used once)
Rome - X100F (again I had a WCL - used one day)
Newcastle - X100F
Glasgow - X100F
Malta - GFX50S+GF45mm - effectively a supersized X100 camera
Copenhagen - Q3
London - Q3
London Q3 43

On none of those I've regretted my equipment choices, but the Malta trip was what finally convinced me that I needed a Q3 in my life. the IQ of the GFX was faultless, but the weight/size was just slightly too much. Q3 is 50% of the weight of GFX50S+GF45mm, and the X100VI is close to 50% of the weight of the Q3!!!!! My X100 feels a bit toy-like next to the Leica, but it is still a very capable camera.

My recomendation is just to try it :) You always seem to want to travel light (hence previous M43 kit), and now is your chance to do it properly!!!

I often shot with just one focal length these days, general shooting has been the RX1R II and now X100VI, and for car events it’s been either 35mm or 50mm, however it’s holidays, I’d kick myself if I couldn’t get a shot because of focal length.

For example we tend to visit churches/cathedral’s such as the Sagrada Familia and the interior really needs a wide angle. I know you can stitch but you tend to get parallax errors.

Makes a lot of sense, although just posted a reasoning above for the want of wide angle.

Money no object I’d definitely have a Q3 (y)

I took the decision to only have digital ILC for longer focal lengths (and even then I only have two lenses!), by selling/swapping around kit, this has enabled my Q3 habit, it all depneds where your personal prefrences/priorities fall. But like you I have limited funds available, I've just chosen to spend mine differently. I wouldn't be surprised if each of our digital camera bags costs about the same (at UK prices your E-mount lenses add up to my Q3 + Q3 43!!!!)

I did Scilly and a few other ports on a cruise last year.
About 90% of the time I used the xe1 + 27mm. Only popping the 18mm on for a few shots

Then maybe the XE4 or something with the small 23mm and then a nice wide lens would be the answer rather than an X100vi? The issue then, is that you need to resist buying more lenses.....

That's where I can live with the X100f. I quite enjoy 35mm equiv, I love the OVF and I don't want to have another camera system.

We've only recently done UK holidays though so I usually take quite a selection with me, but I don't carry everything with me on a daily basis - I'd think about where we were going that day and just take minimal.

We're only doing UK holidays this year, saving up for the big one next year. I'm happier just having a 35mm (or eq) for UK hols. Another concern I have taking only the X100VI on holidays abroad is the single card slot.

I have had thoughts about something like the 10-24mm and forcing myself just to use it at 24mm unless I'm indoors, but I know if I buy another ILC I'll end up buying multiple lenses  Of course I do have the 16-35mm for my Sony which I could do the same, Looking on camerasize there's not much difference in bulk between the A1 and 16-35mm and X-T5 and 10-24mm WR, but there is a 300g weight difference. GAS is a terrible affliction :ROFLMAO:

You’re right, I’m very fortunate and have a lot of money tied up in photography gear and I could sell most of it and buy a Leica Q3, but most of that fulfils a purpose that the Q3 can’t unfortunately. Moving forward I don’t want to be spending loads of money on gear as I’m finding I’m doing photography less and less. I’m happy to swap and change and maybe add a little bit, but I don’t want any more big outlays (y)
