The Formula 1 / IndyCar Thread

I understand the whinging... it's not great to see but it's part of the gamesmanship. Same as Sainz & Perez at the safety car line. Everyone wants to gain as much as possible and if that involves calling out an opponent at every opportunity, they will.

What I did not like, is RedBull only switching Perez behind Sainz after the restart, it was tactical to avoid Sainz gaining on Max and should have switched places before the re-start to be fair.

You can't switch before, it's illegal to pass under the safety car. They discussed that on the commentary.

The stewards should have acted more quickly as the information was available to them long before the safety car was called in. RB just played the game and I suspect every other team would have too.

We will hear more of the radio whinging as the teams no longer have the hotline to race direction so the best way to highlight stuff is to keep voicing it on the radio. I don't like it.

It was a good drive by Max and Leclerc and clean but Max knew where he had an advantage. It'll be different at a circuit where he perceives he doesn't have a distinct advantage, I think we will see old Max reappear.

I thought Lewis drove well and was a little unlucky with the timing of the pit lane closure. Mercedes has some work to do though. Better result for Maclaren which I am pleased about.

I do wonder if Latiffi is running out of money given how often he breaks cars? :p

Two wrongs don't make a right, though... Had to wait until the restart to switch places.
I think there will be another rule amendment there then. It's unfair on Sainz that he has to fight Sergio for the place & defend from George at the restart when he should have been attacking Max. Sergio makes an illegal overtake and gets the advantage...? What would have happened if George got past Sainz. Would Checo then have to lose two places?

Anyway... Kudos to Max and Charles for keeping it clean and making for an exciting ending.

Given the drivers are talking a lot over the radio, so thats 20 conversations going on, who is making the decision only to broadcast the ones where Max is moaning, a bit of the Netflix influence I think. They never played any Ocon/Alonso radio, I bet that got a bit heated. Hamilton must make 100+ radio messages during a race but they only ever broadcast "my tyres have gone off"

Hamilton is old news at the moment, so his moaning about a car that is struggling isn’t very ‘interesting’.

Max ‘Pottymouth’ Verstappen on the other hand, is current World Champion and spitting his dummy out about something or other whenever things aren’t going how he thinks* it should. Hence his every utterance is ‘newsworthy’.

*used advisedly

Having been a fan of all motor sport for the last 30 years -all but 80% of my life - after the way last season ended and how it was handled and despite the ‘excitement’ of a new formula just feels very ‘meh’ to me. Doesn’t help that the first 2 races have been at venues totally devoid of sole and atmosphere.

Let’s hope the always wonderfully colourful and vibrant Albert park helps to change that this weekend. Oh and bring a 90s rally fan a sainz win would be nice.

I watched the 1989 Australian GP on Sky last. The high point of Nakajima’s career, even Hunt was singing his praises.
Those cars looked so small compared to today’s.

The quickest way around Imola has always been to use a lot of kerb, this years cars are not so keen on riding kerbs. It could see a bit of a mix up of positions in the midfield, looking forward to it.

I wonder which bit of the Red Bull's fuel system is going to break this weekend...

Well done to Max and Checo brilliant Drive by both , looking to be a great Season
Russell had a decent drive too, especially considering how much Hamilton is struggling in the same car which looks bloody awful right now.

Considering the vitriol heaped on Bottas on some other forums, I think he did an exceptional job, he is a class act.
Bottas is a solid driver. He gets a lot of unwarranted cr*p from the Hamilton/Mercedes haters, who now think it’s hilarious that he is currently doing better than Hamilton. There is a certain level of irony of course that Bottas, having been dropped by Mercedes is currently sat in a better car. I don’t think many would have predicted that.

There is no doubt that the start of this season has shown if you don't have a competitive car, you have little chance of winning a race, let alone the championship. And I thought a lot of last years R&D went into this car. Were they all working from home due to Covid? As the Mercedes just isn't in touching distance of the two other big teams.

A lot of R&D did go into the cars, though there are significant restrictions on wind tunnel time, size of the scale model used (can’t be bigger than 60%), computing time where they’re only allowed so many cpu clock cycles, and they have to specify which machines are used, how many cores, cpu serial numbers etc. etc. Very limited time on track before the start of the season too. It’s all in the sporting regs.

All of the teams are having correlation issues with their CFD models and on track performance, especially with respect to understanding how/why the floor switching on and off.

I think Mercedes have developed an aero package where the floor is currently too powerful when it’s switched on, but goes into a resonance that they aren’t able to bring under control in the braking zone.

Well, on the week we go to some over hyped American car park with a painted lake and fake marina, one of the real hero’s of yesteryear has passed away. It reminds me how much more I love the history of this sport than it’s current guise.

RIP Mr Brooks

Romain Grosjean just hit 240mph in practice for the Indy500.
Top speed or average over a lap? If that's the average that's really fast for Indy and very close to Gil de Ferran's closed course record.

Kudos to Grosjean, he’s done a good run in qualifying. Currently 4th at 231.999mph.

Indy 500 Fast Six Qualifier:

1st – Scott Dixon – #9, Chip Ganassi Racing, Honda – 234.046
2nd – Alex Palou – #10, Chip Ganassi Racing, Honda – 233.499
3rd – Rinus VeeKay – #21, Ed Carpenter Racing, Chevrolet – 233.385
4th – Ed Carpenter – #33, Ed Carpenter Racing, Chevrolet – 233.08
5th – Marcus Ericsson – #8, Chip Ganassi Racing, Honda – 232.764
6th – Tony Kanaan – #1, Chip Ganassi Racing, Honda – 232.372

Here we are in 2022 and still the fastest Brickyard lap is Arie Luyendyk's 237.498, with a four lap average of 236.986 in 1996 ( the politics of the split mean he only qualified in 21st position)

Oh Lordy, I’ve just noticed that Nadine Dorries is at the British Grand Prix. Supporting Lewis George or Lando Calrissian no doubt. Play ball!

Brilliant end to the race though. I'd like to see a "no pitting under safety car" rule brought in, it does give a major advantage to those that can take it.
