The Great Meteorological Thread

Summer solstice has been and gone (it was at 05:04 UT)...

Hello summer! Currently 21 degrees here but that's in the conservatory - 14 outside. Roll on 23/08 when we'll be back in the warmth/heat and can expect mid 20s at midnight!
 
Afternoon all from an overcast Folkestone. It has been quite dull and grey all morning with even some mist, but now a tinge of brightness is trying to cut through the gloom (like being inside a well lit soft light box).
As a result, temperatures are slowly responding in kind by it getting up to 16.7 C currently. Considering my home location is the nearest point to the Continent, you think it'd be a lot warmer than this by now.

I did this cartoon back in January, it is now looking like as if I knew exactly how this Summer was going to pan out for around here. Seems that this doodle is looking more and more uncannily relevant by the day.

As for the forecast itself; After what will be quite a cool and windy weekend where there'll be a fair amount of cloud cover with some rain (mostly showery in nature but some areas may do better in terms of bright spells) over the UK, there are signs of things settling down and becoming brighter and drier for longer as we go into next week.
However, it's still not really going to get that hot (average to slightly above temperatures) as a ridge of high pressure noses in from the Azores but our winds will be coming mostly in from the west or north west anyway.
 
Since it looked and smelled as though it would be a dry afternoon, I broke out the paint and a brush to finish a job I started a few weeks ago. Of course, 1/2 an hour later it started to drizzle lightly! TF I'd used Smoothrite and it was dry!!!
 
I headed up a mountain in the mist today as I had the afternoon to myself and in the off chance it would clear and it sure did had some keepers with the low cloud clearing, back now and showered sat in garden with a nice cold beer in the sun,

It's turning out quite bright here at Folkestone at the moment after that dull morning.

Ouch. Felt that one, but that's just it, it has been a very "unreliable" Spring and now it looks like Summer is following along in the same fashion. I've only been able to sit out in the garden three times without getting covered with goosepimple so far this year.
 
One thing I noticed today was the humidity it was like being back in the jungle, complete mist and no sooner than it cleared I could see the heat rising from the ground to.
 
Leading on from my previous post earlier thought I would share a couple of images, as we photographers say a picture paints a......... hope you dont mind Ian? will take down if need be, winds started picking up here now cups on wind sensor are spinning round for sure low pressure moving in.

Those are amazing pictures! Does look like the sky really has fallen down to the ground. That does look positively steamy.

I've managed to bag this sun rise as viewed from my bathroom window at 4.45 am a few mornings ago, since then it's been mostly pale blues and greys:

Nice vivid colours sunrises like this made me pick up a camera and if only I had one with me during my walks home after the nightshift a long time ago, missed out on some cracking sunrises over Snowdonia,
Very windy here now looks like a day indoors today.

Afternoon from a breezy, overcast, cold and damp Folkestone.

The Folkestone Fish Festival and the Manston Air Show both has been cancelled on account of the weather. As a result, there must be a lot of frustrated sightseerers wandering about the area right now.

Summer has arrived. :D

Unfortunately I didn't due to thick cloud cover and murk, but then again, shouldn't come as a surprise what with our climate.

Still a full moon tonight but it's probably a mile or 2 further away from Earth than it was yesterday... So not so super!!!:lol:
 
Mornin' Michael and anyone else reading this bit. Indeed, still generally dry, cool and rather cloudy here at Kent. Hopefully the sun will try and break through as we go into the afternoon.
Tomorrow does look set to be sunnier and even that bit warmer, at least over Southern parts.
A bit of a "breakdown" on Monday and into Tuesday but hopefully more in the way of summer-like conditions will try and work it's way in as we go into the second half of the week.

You have to admit that while this summer so far isn't being particularly memorable, it is different on last year what with the lack of stormy wet weather.
 
Mist and drizzle here, just turned on the tv and tennis was on thought it was a repeat, the sun certainly is out down south today, visibility 200m here.

Its not been a bad day here, after all the rain of yesterday.
Broken cloud with the sun appearing now and again, light breeze and low 20's.

Currently, my hill is in cloud and feeling cold, damp and miserable; but at least it isn't raining. :bonk:
 
Almost as if a huge city had sprung out of nowhere, and will be gone just as quickly.

Anyway, afternoon from what is a rather cool, cloudy and misty Folkestone. It was quite fine and sunny and even felt properly warm this morning, but then suddenly at 12 pm low cloud rolled in from the Channel and it has been that way since then (it's now 3.30 pm as I type). The obligatory afternoon sea breeeze is also making it feel cool.
 
Afternoon from a rather cloudy and damp Folkestone, but it does seems that Summer is on it's way.

It'll be fine and warm with some good spells of sunshine and variable cloud amounts on Saturday, but there is that risk of coastal mist as well as there being rather more in the way of cloud amounts with patchy rain over the far North West.

It's really Sunday that is expected to be warmer still with more in the way of sunshine - as indicated by the map blelow. So, if you're like me and not a huge heat lover then head to the coast where it'll be cooler - while at the same time hoping there'll be little in the way of sea mist!

The fine and settled summer-like conditions are expected to last into most of next week but is unlikely to be as hot as Sunday, but nonetheless it'll still be very pleasantly warm at 22 C to 25 C all the same, so I'd bank that if I were you.

After what has been a very slow and painful start to the season, I think it is fair to say that summer is finally on it's way, so I'll use every corny cliché there is in this business . . . slap on that sun cream, fire up the BBQ, set the garden chairs out and pour out the Pimms as the mercury begin to rise. All better late than never as the papers start to show those obligatory images of bikini-clad ladies frolicking about on the beach.

Unless you're a hay fever sufferer in which case, the pollen count will be quite high for the next few days.
 
We have a huge walk in fridge at work and i did a 1/2 hr worth of paperwork in it this morning :D
 
Mornin' all from a sunny Folkestone but there is a cheeky breeze coming in from the north east (in from the North Sea) but it is still feeling very warm and pleasant in my sheltered back yard anyway.
Things are going to become cloudy and cooler for a time over the Eastern side of the UK in the middle part of the week thanks to a weak front trying to move in from the North Sea, but the signs are there for temperatures to start rising again over the bulk of the country by the weekend.
Until then, it looks like the West of the UK is going to be the Best in terms of sunshine and sustained warmth as we go through this week.

Its a crap job, but someone has to do it :p

Had to nip down to Basingstoke this morning, so got an early start,
and the traffic was appalling!
or or 2 miles of jams and crawling traffic,
Not seen it like that before :(
(Oh and yes I did avoid the M25 like the plague)
It must have been the balmy 16oC at 6am that was bringing them all out
of the wood work

Its probably a tad hot out there for me at the moment ;)

But I certainly wouldn't miss the UK traffic that's for sure.

Yep, it's certainly a lot cooler up here. Yesterday was around 25, struggling to hit 20 today. Not complaining, 20 is bloody marvellous! 'We' need a lie down when it hits 19 lol. Pretty much full white cloud, too.
Good to hear it looks like an improvement toward the weekend, I start 20 days of annual leave on Sat :)
 
Another hot day today here the hottest I recall on the hills even at 06:00hrs this morning I was struggling. I managed to capture a sundog to today taken around 19:45 this evening :)
