The IS in 70-300 Canon IS USM

Is it normal for this lens that u hear the IS working? Each time I shoot I hear a very thin sharp niose folllowed by this clicky niose coming from inside the lens. Its relatively loud. Its after the clicky sound is over that the image is shown on LCD. Granted being used to the old 75-300 USM this one shoots crystal clear photos. Was just wondering that the sound of the les is ok and not that its a broken piece.

Also just tried it taking a pic after another it was a myraid of nioses, sharp and thin followed by the clicky sound. Its quite annoying
 
Yep, completely normal! When I started using mine I was a bit worried about it, but it's a common feature!
 
As above, yes it's normal to hear the IS motors working during shooting and for a short period afterwards. :thumbs:
 
Don't worry about the noise, the most important thing is to let the IS stabalise before taking the photo.

On a few occasions I have quickly grabbed a shot before the IS was doing it's job, got a fuzzy photo, and wondered what had happened until I looked at the EXIF and discovered I was using some ridiculously low shutter speed:bonk:

I certainly won't be buying another telephoto lens without IS.

thanks for peace of mind guys. Got me worried cause my kit lens 18-55 IS does not have any niose. But i read 100-400 do it as well then its safe.

Well took it to a falconary club for a 1st day job and most shots were awesome when using IS mode 2. IS mode 1 gives u fuzzy birds flying.


Now to try it for wildlife to see if it has the same clear pics.

Wilid1 what u mean not take pics before IS is ready? Meaning I cant take a sequence of photos one right after the other? hope not the case

I'm assuming s/he means that the IS takes a few moments to stabilise when it first starts up. So ideally you should half-press the shutter, the IS will kick in, then wait for everything to stop moving before taking the shot.

Taking a sequence will be fine because the IS keeps running while you keep shooting, it doens't keep starting and stopping.

You will find the lens waits a few seconds after you have taken your finger off the shutter button before it stops, you will hear the IS noise stop.

So yes for a sequence just make sure you hold the shutter at half press (or better still use back button focus)
