Enrique Carbonell was a man of commerce in Alcoy, Spain. One day he traveled by mule, with his assistant, to Alicante in search of new business opportunities.
They entered the city's nicest hotel to secure lodgings for the night; but after a hard day of traveling in the hot dust bowl that is this province, they arrived not looking their best. The staff at the hotel reception refused them rooms. Carbonell was affronted. Despite his bedraggled appearance, he was a distinguished, wealthy and important man. His words fell on deaf ears, and they were escorted to the door.
On leaving, Carbonell turned to the manager of the hotel and vowed to build the most beautiful building in Alicante, so close to the hotel that henceforth the hotel would always been in its shade.
Carbonell was good to his word. This is Casa Carbonell, and the hotel is behind it. In its shade....
