I'd like to try my hand at getting some shots of the Milky Way. I have a couple locations in mind. Is there a website that maps light pollution levels? And also, how do I determine where the Milky Way is? Will it be obvious?

I'd like to try my hand at getting some shots of the Milky Way. I have a couple locations in mind. Is there a website that maps light pollution levels? And also, how do I determine where the Milky Way is? Will it be obvious?

Download stellarium, which is free. Put in your location either by town or city or as lat and long and you can rotate the night sky around you and see in which direction the Milky Way is.

To add, based on that map, I have had successful results from areas that are green and fairly good results from yellows.
