I think they're great, but I would get rid of the huge rock in the foreground of number one because I think it detracts from the rest of the photo. There are two many objects vying for attention, which is why I think photo number two works better!
Indeed. HDR is used to bring out detail in areas where the camera is unable to record in one shot. There are no areas where these images lack detail. Grad filters were used, and the final exposure is excellent.

Re: the suggestion of HDR - I really try to keep my photo's as true and real as possible, thou I have used HDR in the past.
I've sent off the second on to be printed and will get framed.
