The new Sony RX100 as DSLR backup?

I've been looking for a long while, like I'm sure many people have, for a compact to drop in a pocket but which gets somewhere close to a DSLR image quality.

It looks like the manufacturers have at ast realised there's a market and following on from the Fuji X10/X100 & the Canon X Sony have released the RX100 which looks on paper the best of the bunch as "pocketable" goes...anyone giving it any thought?

It is better than the X10 in that it actually fits in your pocket but don't know about anything else.

Yes, I think we need an international standard measurement for a pocket :)

The X10 doesn't fit in any pocket of any clothing item I own but maybe I favour smaller pocketed clothing that would only be rated as 0.6 on pocket scale...
 
The RX100 seems amazing for the size of camera. :eek:

I didn't think that they could fit in a larger sensor into a camera of that size, and to pair it with a wide f1.8 aperture (at least at it's widest angle) is stunning. :eek:

I have a Canon S95, which the RX100 copies very closely in many respects, and to have that level of tech in something that size would be great, if it backs it up with the performance.

It will be interesting to see some of the reviews when they start to come online to see if Sony have pulled it off. :)
 
I've churned through a few reviews that are available and all seem very positive. It's a shame they have removed the viewfinder but I guess to squeeze everything into the body something had to give, apprently the LCD is supposed to be slightly better than normal to make it easier to use in daylight, like most people I'm waiting for user feedback too before taking the plunge
