The old tripod question.

I am looking to buy a Manfrotto tripod, one where the central column can be turned horizontally.

I think probably the 055Xprob or the 190xprob. I have read reviews on the web until my eyes bleed but cannot decide.

Are there other Manfrottos where the central column converts?

I am 6ft 2ins so want something which is not too short.

I know there are pros and cons for all items but I am hoping someone can throw their comments in and help me decide.

I'd go with the 055Xprob - it is a little heavier but is well worth the extra weight. I don't know if other Tripods have the convertible column. The 055Xprob is a very solid piece of gear and with your height will work well.
 
The 055XPROB is what I'd go for (and indeed did go for). It's very sturdy - if a little heavy.
You can have the column horizontal, vertical and upside down if you want, it's very versatile.

You'll probably be able to use it without raising the centre column.

Looks like the 055Xprob is going to be the one unless anyone else throws a spanner in the works.

Will start looking around as I don't mind a used one.:thumbs:

I know you're convinced, so I'm just adding a post for the heck of it...but I settled on the 055XPro because the convertible center column is very useful for photos of coins (my other hobby being numismatics) with a macro lens.
 
Yes, thanks hunter. I must admit that the convertible centre column, as well as the extra height, was also one of the things which attracted me to this tripod. I have tried macro on a table with my old one and it is really difficult.
 
I have the 055xprob, a brilliant piece of kit.

I did struggle with low level shots though, as when I turn the centre column through 90 degrees so that it is horizontal, my tripod heads would not let me angle the camera back far enough (camera was always pointing down slightly).

Problem solved just last week as I have now purchased a short centre column for the tripod - just remove the standard column and swap over, and I can get to about 8" off the ground!

Really? Specs say the height with the centre column down is 142 cm. Add in 20 cm for the head and the camera gives you 162 cm. At 6'3" you are 191 cm. Is your forehead really 1 foot high?

I'm 195 cm and the 055 series was way too low for me to use with the centre column down.
