Hi,

I am looking at getting a couple of photography location books.

I have been looking at the 'The Photographer's Guide to' the Lake District, North Wales and the Peak District. They are priced around £12.95 each.

Are these any good?

+ are the Fotovue ones worth forking out the extra for? (In particular the Lake District one)

Thanks,

Tom

Tom, I have recently bought the Photographing Scotland one from PhotoVue and I'm very impressed with it, I also know that the North Wales one gets rave reviews also (in fact I think Simon might be a member on here..)

Can't recommend them highly enough and I believe there's a TP discount at PhotoVue

It could be better if you eschewed such guides and concentrated on finding your own perspectives. The trouble is that they would seem to encourage everyone to take what could be interpreted as the same pictures.

Or, it could alert one to visit great locations as a starting point.

£12.95 doesn't sound too bad if it gives you some starting points. I always look at postcards in the local area as well.

Hi Tom,

I'm the author of the North Wales "FotoVue" book... Photographing North Wales.... the £12.95 books are an alternative to ours. Obviously I'm a little biased ;-) but the books that myself and the FotoVue authors produce are more comprehensive than the alternatives... for example my Photographing North Wales includes 100+ locations whereas the alternative book just 50. One of the main differences I think is worth considering though is that the FotoVue books are all written by local authors who live/photograph in the areas concerned, the other guides are written by a single author.

:withstupid: :D
I have that book on North Wales, didn't realise it was written by a member. I bought it for trips to Anglesea/Snowdon area and it is very informative with suggestions and some excellent photography.

Thanks for that Simon, good points raised. The Fotovue books do look very good to be honest. I do like the fact that the photographers are from the area/ a specialist in photography of that particular areas.

Cheers

Thanks for the pointers everyone.

@droj as mentioned by others I am simply getting these to look for rough starting locations to allow me to get/shoot my own perspective of the areas - plus, for example the Fotovue ones I believe give helpful information about seasonal expectations and parking locations that I will find useful as opposed to spending ages googling for this information.
