Hi all,

Up to now I've only bought these 500gb external hard drives:-

They have been fine but now that I've nearly filled the second one I thought it was time to get a third. So what's the latest "must have" in terms of good quality, reliable EHDs?? Also - would I be better off with a 1TB drive or should I stick to another 500gb??

Very boring but necessary...........

Any advice greatly appreciated :)

I'd go for a TB at least. Let's face it, you're never going to need less space ;)
 
I agree as we add more mega-pixels to our cameras & shot RAW we need more space. I have now moved to 1TB with 1.5Tb as back ups
 
Are you after another desktop one? Or a mobile one? Or even a network one?

I rate the LaCie drives, but haven't tried any of their desktop ones.
 
As starrider says, I troo have a 1 TB seagate, should you go to pc world though, buy online then collect........ far bloody cheaper.......... I didi that the other day with a memory upgrade.... £99 in the shop.£69 on the iphone. Take it to the till, quote some crap ref no and get the discount!!!!

Currys etc the same........


Seagate is a pretty much trusted brand.........in the memory world..........

Although I've had few problems with Seagate disks, I rate Samsung Spinpoints more. Just bought a pair of 1TB disks from Scan for £120.
 
I swear by the WD passport drives (non powered)

I have about 3 of them and never had a problem. Fantastic and portable.

PC World usually does the best prices.

Hey, I was saying I've had few problems - I was not bitching about Seagate. In our environment, we must have over a thousand deployed so "few problems" is quite a compliment :thumbs:

Two failed Spinpoint F1 1tb drives has put me off them.
 
I've heard a lot of positives about Samsung drives, especially in their more recent internal incarnations (Spinpoint F2). And when I was looking for a portable HDD, I was pointed in the direction of the Samsung Story 1.5TB on several occasions. 1.5TB for £90 delivered with reputable drives inside - look no further!

Just ordered myself a Samsung 1.5TB Story Station from amazon for about £90.

The reviews on the Amazon site looked vary favourable and I liked the colour.

Up until a year ago I would have said Seagate every time. However, the new cheap 1TB and 2TB external range have a nasty fault that seems endemic. Do a search on 'clicking seagate external' and see what you get! I've got the 1TB version and it's started doing it too.

I've heard Western Digital are the daddy now, but to be honest I think it's all much of a muchness these days...

So we can conclude from this that Samsung drives have a 100% failure rate :) Dammit - I knew I should not have bought them!

Quite true. There's a reason why even the big boys like Dell only give you the choice of disk size, not make - even to corporates.
 
I used to buy Seagate up until the 7200.10's and then I think the .11 were notoriously bad so I switched to Western Digital Green and Blacks.
As for external HD's, I stopped buying ready made externals and opted to getting this adapter and then buying OEM hard drives as and when I need.
I find you pay over the odds when pre-made in a caddy compared to buying a larger capacity HD from a component shop and just attaching the IDE/Sata to USB adapter to it when I need to back up.
Also helps when doing fixes for friends and family or when PC refuses to boot and you want quick access to the data.
 
I bought a 1TB bufallo NAS drive. I connected it sometime last year, setup the backup software and its been doing its thing ever since.
 
Ive got a 320gb seagate external HD and I haven't treat it well at all, but its still working fine :) It's been unplugged accidently etc etc
 
Only thing that worries me with the large capacity external drives is how many images i might loose if it fails :eek:
 
I've got a HP Media Vault with 2 500gig sammys in it, networked and serves music, movies etc to bedroom, main pc and 3 laptop in the house!, Ive also got an icybox unit (usb) with 2 500 gig drives in with my stuff on!
