The Streets

Cool project. I think I recognise the 2nd one, is that near Hyde Park (not the London one)? I usually try to get some shots of interesting street art when I see it, but as you suggest it can be a bit difficult to find a different take on it, other than just recording what's there.
Maybe think about getting passersby included in the shot, maybe interacting with the art in some way or perhaps show a bit of the location the graffiti is in.

Not particularly great examples of what I mean (no much interacting going on), but these were some of my attempts:

This was one I took that could have done with a bit more context

The image of the face was massive. It was painted on a partially demolished apartment block, and each of those rectangles represents a room (you can still see some of the tiles on the walls). I think I completely failed to give a sense of that though, and could have done with a wider shot to give a better sense of scale.

Good stuff so far though, keep it going!

I agree with Tim that you should perhaps think about showing more of the context and surroundings that each piece is set in. With the second and third shots you can just about deduce what they are because of the bricks and car park signs, but the heavy cropping on the other three shots means that they might just as well be the front of somebody's t-shirt as shots of street art. Nice pictures, but to me they kind of miss the whole point of the project.

By the way, if you want to explore different cities and countries, have you been to Lyon? Loads of fantastic street art all over the city!

Hi Samantha. Search out a member here called lfc1982 and try and find a link to his flickr stream. He has a bit of a thing about graffiti and has photographed alot all over the place. As Tim said, the usual thing to do is to include a passer by from distance in a wider shot, but... 'that's usual' and not really developing your own style. So, either wait for a certain kind of person to enter the frame or make it your own with your processing and create your style that way so it becomes recogniseable as your work (the photo).

Good start though, makes me want to have a bash at it.

Hey Tim yes I totally get what you guys are saying with it being my first real street art photographs I feel like I might have been showing too much of the art and focusing on just one thing instead of a variety which can make the images look more interesting. Yes some of the images are from Hyde park just up in Headingley your images look great really captured some amazing sites!
