The two different Nikon 50mm f1.4 lenses

One has a focus motor built in (the AF-S 'G' lens), one doesn't (the 'D' lens). Should only matter if you have a body with no focus motor (D3100/5000/60/40 etc).
As far as I know they're optically the same, but I have no experience to confirm this. I like the sound of these, but just don't know if they're worth the extra cash over the f1.8.

One is gelded, (G), ie no aperture ring. Not sure if the D lens has an internal focusing motor. If it dosen't then it limits the bodies that will maintain AF.
Someone will correct me if I'm wrong
ETA beaten to it!
The AF-D won't have a focus motor so will be MF only on the D3000,3100,5000,60,40(x) etc. The G also includes a lens hood and soft case where the D doesn't. Personally for the sake of £50 I'd probably save for a G.

you'll notice the difference on FF cameras. The G is noticeably sharper across the frame wide open.

They're not the same, aside from all the things mentioned above the 'G' is a marked improvement in terms of image quality and contrast over the 'D'
The 'D' is faster focusing in good light, however in poor light or low contrast situations the 'G' will lock focus faster, with more accuracy and without the hunting the 'D' can exhibit
