The Zenitar 16mm fisheye - my opinions on it

Hi guys

I'm sure this has been posted before but I thought I would do this post for anyone unaware of this lens. It is old, Russian, manual and cheap. Around £100 if you're patient and watch popular auction sites. 16mm F/2.8 full frame.

There are a few reviews knocking about online worth checking out. But I'll describe my thoughts and experience.

I bought one in M42 mount and used a M42-EF adapter with a chip (it reports 50mm) which allows auto focus confirm to work. It wouldn't tighten onto the adapter far enough so I had to undo three screws and adjust the front hood part so that it didn't cause vignetting. I also had to adjust focus ring by removing the rubber band, focussing on infinity, undoing three screws so the elements don't move with the ring, aligning the focus ring and then redoing up the screws (this was because I removed the rearmost clear screw in filter element thingy because it was catching my 5D's mirror).

Once "calibrated" I realised it was one hundred pounds WELL SPENT. It's nice to use even though it is manual, feels solid and produces nice photos when stopped down. My only complaint is that the lens hood doesn't like to stay in place in the camera bag. Here are a few photos of it, and with it. I don't know the apertures of the photos as it doesn't report back.

You can see from this one that the front most part with in built hood doesn't align with the red further down the lens that used to be the centre

I am pretty sure this is 2.8 (2.8 is OK but soft corners)

No idea of these apertures

You may notice my dog looks scared *****less. That's because she hates my camera because she is terrified of the noise USM makes (we can't hear it). She runs away as soon as AF kicks in on any USM lens.

1024px on the longest side please.
And also be a little more considerate with the old Mb(s)
Thanks

Resized Cobra, sorry about that. Like you said, a little on the large size.

fantastic!!!
I've been toying with one of these as a cheap option for full frame... this has convinced me :)

YAY! You won't regret it.

It takes a little bit of playing around with a screw driver when you first get it (be careful, the screws are quite brittle) but that makes it all the more satisfying!

now all I have to do is find one :-D I swear there were about 3 on ebay (canon fit) last week and now none!

Several available on eBay including new.

I have one of these too. Been meaning to do a review of it for ages, but not got round to it yet. But i do very much like it, especially considering how cheap it is!

I think I paid around £105 for mine, second hand. I've seen them go for £90 ish sometimes.

The Canon mount ones do not have the AF confirm chip but you could probably glue one on. I also read that it isn't a good mount (low tolerance) and wobbles a bit.

My advice would be to try and find a M42 version and then buy a decent quality M42-EF adapter with the chip. I have just had a look and it appears the latest chips can be programmed from the camera to report back the correct focal length. This may add £15-20 to the cost of this lens but worth it for that lovely AF beep right?

There are a bunch of m42 for £155, there is a nikon mount one for £100 so I guess I could get an adapter for that!

Adam, that would be my approach in your situation. The adapters can be had from the UK for around £16 with the chip (not sure if programmable). And if there is any problem with the adapter it will be easy to complain being a UK seller.

Keep us posted on your decisions :)

Mine is a canon mount version. I haven't looked closely, but I am pretty sure it is just the m42 version with a pre-fitted adapter. So I would be interested to upgrade to a mount with af confirmation, not that manual focusing is tricky with such a wide lens.

It isn't too tricky no, but it's nice to have the beep if shooting from down low or up high where you can't look through the viewfinder. You could always glue a chip on (I did with a lensbaby) and then you get metadata even if it's wrong. The benefit there is when trawling through lightroom you can select the lens when refining searches. Mine used to report unknown lens with focal length 50mm on 5d. Now it says 0-653665mm lens with focal length 50mm on 5d2. I might buy a programmable one....

Brilliant! A decision you shan't regret.

Just be gentle with the screws if you do need to adjust. Remove the rear screw in filter thing so it doesn't risk hitting the mirror and be careful not to stretch the band if you do need to adjust the infinity point. You won't need to adjust the hood part because it isn't threaded like m42.

I've just started searching for one these myself, cheers for posting the review, will help with my decision!

Mine arrived today :)
Unfortunately not in the best condition :-/

Thankfully it appears to take clear pictures, quite soft at f/2.8 though.

Thus far it appears to fix straight into the nikon - EF adapter and doesn't appear to get anywhere near the mirror (not 100% sure how to check though!)

Hopefully it'll be sunny tomorrow and I can try it out properly :)

Maybe this thread should be renamed 'Zenitar Fisheye owners thread' :-D

If it's in worse condition than the seller lead you to believe I would ask for a partial refund personally. Are the optics ok?

How soft does it look? Just when zoomed right in? My personal opinion is that wide angle lenses only don't need to be pin sharp because you wouldn't likely be cropping. It does sharpen quickly when stopped down however. And the 1/focal length gives a nice 1/16!

And you'd know if it hit the mirror because the camera wouldn't take photos, just a clunk then an error!

I figured I would hear something!
I'm not that impressed, it rattles and the optics aren't that great, although there is little impact on the IQ as far as I can see. I wouldn't mind but it was described 'as new'!

For £100 for a full frame fish-eye though, I am not that disappointed!

I might send it back and wait for another decent copy.

Here are a couple from the weekend though, both shot on 5.6-8 I think, I need to play with wider apertures more before I make an honest decision!

Hi Adam

Nice shots!

If it is rattling then I personally would want to return it. My copy is solidly built with no rattles or problems at all so they're not like that from new. I read lots of reviews and everyone said the build is great. Maybe it just has a screw or two loose?

Adam, any update on your Zenitar?

It went back AGES ago, I am just waiting for the seller to refund me.
I am however keeping an eye out for another as I LOVED it!

Nice one David! Lovely sample pictures.

In your shoes I would purchase an EMF AF confirm chip and superglue it onto the lens. You may want to just double sided sticky tape it. As mentioned above, you can then programme the chip to 16mm f/2.8 for easy lookup using metadata. There is the the added benefit of af confirm beep too.

Cheers.

It's on my list of things to do from when I read this thread first time round. Still not got round to it though. :bonk:

I really like the messy sky on the halfpipe picture, all those vapour trails. I'm surprised there is no flare, you're shooting right into the sun!

Haha fair enough. They take a couple of weeks to arrive from China so why not order one now.. Make sure it's the EMF type though. Some don't allow programming, or some just allow aperture programming. They are around £5/6

I've read reports of the chip needing to be raised a little with a slice of cardboard so I wouldn't superglue it right away.

I'll check back in a month and hassle you to fit it as well if you like

ANOTHER UPDATE:

If you want a rectilinear(ish) image, then use the lightroom profile for Nikon 10.5mm. That seems to work well. As illustrated below with corrected images from the start.
