Thermal Imaging Cameras

Does anyone use thermal imaging cameras for work or know much about them ?
Can they be used in the same way as dslr cameras to provide jpg or similar files to make prints with ?

We use two types, NIght Vision (IR and thermal) and also machine mounted FLIR

You can download stills from the video recordings but not shoot stills.

are the stills taken from the video of high enough quality to make useable prints ?
can the video itself be coded as an mp4 for web display ?

Which model camera are you using ? I would be looking for something portable to use on city streets.

What size prints do you want? I have a little FLIR camera but at 300 dpi, prints are small!

The machine mounted is a FLIR star Safire 380HD I think

Not sure about the models of hand held (helmet mounted) I will check when back at work

The FLIR tk1 is about a 3mp sensor and can do Jpgs IIRC

There is a Flir thermal camera attachment for iPhone which is reasonably cheap if you want to get started in thermal.
Theres also someone near Gloucester that uses one to do animal portraits - seen them at country fairs in the area and they created quite an interest.

I'd like to know what the guy is using for animal portraits that sounds like the kind of camera I'm looking for although the iphone attachments look practical to experiment with

Yup! That's why I have a very basic one. Still more expensive than my DSLR...
